The following contains spoilers for the Carnival Row series finale, "Carnival Row," streaming now on Prime Video.

Season 2 of Carnival Row is filled with twists and turns, positioning the Burgue as the backdrop for the civil war after Jonah and Sophie's deaths. The heroic Philo (Orlando Bloom) has tried to work toward the fae and humans co-existing, but no matter what, his plans keep falling short. It doesn't help that the Black Raven terrorists antagonize humans, especially politicians and cops.

Sadly, the rebellious Vignette (Cara Delevingne) doesn't listen to Philo, shattering their love and taking over the Black Ravens to wage war. Luckily, the series finale finds Philo and Vignette coming to a common point, working together to ensure no more bloodshed occurs. Unfortunately, as Carnival Row switches gears, compounding how both were never meant to end up together, it does a significant disservice to the love story that Season 2 tries to anchor around.

Carnival Row Gives Vignette & Tourmaline a Happy Finale

Carnival Row has Vignette and Tourmaline in love

Now, Carnival Row has Philo killing the Burgue's mysterious Sparas, and the faun in Agreus orchestrating Leonora and the New Dawn's demise. This ensures the anti-human movement in the Burgue comes to an end. To cap it all off, Agreus and Imogen, after Ezra's death, use their wealth to rebuild the region in the flash-forward, ushering in an era of peace.

However, Philo remains there to look after human-fae relations, with the show revealing Tourmaline and Vignette have returned to Tirnanoc, getting married and kissing in a unique ceremony. This is their homeland, and so along with others who couldn't stand the Burgue's legacy, it's their way of reclaiming what was lost -- physically and spiritually. But while this should be a triumphant, sentimental moment, the fae couple's story isn't done justice, feeling too superficial despite its happy ending.

Admittedly, Carnival Row undercooks Vignette and Tourmaline, with Season 2 wasting many opportunities to focus on their love. Even in the final two episodes, Vignette spends more time with Philo, with both of them coming to Tourmaline's aid, killing the vicious Sparas to save Tourmaline. If Vignette's her soulmate, that kill should go to her, helping pivot the ending towards them more. In addition, the series has Tourmaline more involved with the werewolf, Darius. Oddly enough, Darius dies fighting for her at the hands of the Sparas, giving him and Tourmaline more emotive exchanges when he could have worked with Philo to stave off Leonora's rebels. This would have allowed Tourmaline and Vignette to get their glory moment versus the monster and cement that they're the show's lead couple.

They were working on snapping this curse prior, so it would've been truly natural for Vignette to stand with Tourmaline, informing that the crush Tourmaline has is being reciprocated and Vignette is indeed choosing her. Instead, everything between them feels platonic, with the focus on Philo devaluing the lead-in to that wedding. In the process, by keeping Vignette and Tourmaline apart most of the season and having Philo, not Tourmaline, be the voice of reason to cause Vignette to abandon her terrorist mission, it's hard to really establish a connection to the idea of the fae women ending up together.

It's a missed opportunity as both ladies have so much chemistry, but the conflict, emotion and endearment just aren't mined properly between them. Ultimately, it diminishes a queer arc in a journey that hinges on the other couple. And unfortunately, despite the ceremony, it feels like Tourmaline's presence is cut back to max out on Bloom's superstar status, precipitating a conclusion more based on style than substance.

Both seasons of Carnival Row are available on Prime Video.
