Netflix has reportedly ordered 20 episodes of the animated series, with the goal to make it educational, with Rodriguez's Sandiego teaching various subjects during her criminal escapades, much like with the original game show, which aired from 1991 to 1995 on PBS.

The character debuted in 1985 in the educational mystery video game "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?," which not only launched a long-running series of sequels but also a pair of television game shows, a Saturday morning cartoon and a long list of books, comics and tabletop games.

A film adaptation was in the works as of 2012, with Darren Lemke ("Jack the Giant Killer") set to write the screenplay and Jennifer Lopez attached as an executive producer.

Rodriguez is busy working on the upcoming fourth season of "Jane the Virgin," the CW comedy-drama for which she earned a Golden Globe Award. She can next be seen in "Annihilation" alongside Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman.
