Cardcaptors (known as Cardcaptor Sakura in Japan) is the type of anime (or manga) that a person just has to see for themselves to really understand the concept. It’s a little zany, not in part because of the unique set of characters who are the focus. One of these characters is known as Cerberus, a powerful, magical, winged, lion-being that moonlights as a stuffed animal to help and protect the female main character.

See? Kind of like Toy Story. If our reader is a real fan, here are 10 interesting things about the beloved stuffed animal that might have escaped notice. If you are not a fan...just enjoy the ride.

10 He Has Many Names

While the common English translation is ‘Cerberus,’ after the Greek mythological three-headed dog that guards Hades, there are several other ways to pronounce it or completely different names that he goes by according to the language and dub.

In the original Japanese content, he was called “Keroberos,” as a play on the name Cerberus. This was then shortened to the super cute Kero or Kero-chan. In the Greek dub, they completely changed his nickname to “Juki,” for reasons unknown. But who cares? Whatever he’s called, Cerberus is the same cute, zany card protector fans know and love.

9 He Doesn’t Need To Eat (But Loves To Anyway)

Despite being an ethereal being who doesn’t need to consume anything, Cerberus can and has been described as a glutton. He loves to enjoy what he calls “finer things,” which includes eating snacks and especially sweets. He loves cake, cookies, and chocolate. He even got drunk off a box of brandy chocolates once, in the anime version.

Cerberus’ huge appetite and even bigger sweet tooth sometimes make it hard for him to share with others, even if he really likes them. Thankfully his kindness usually wins out over his stubbornness and greed, and others can have some ‘finer things’ too.

8 He Is Very Intelligent

Cerberus can be erratic and even egotistical, obsessed with being ‘cool’ and bragging about his achievements. He can also be very whimsical and stubborn. Despite what all these personality traits may have one belief, Kero-chan is incredibly smart. He is a master of the Clow Cards and has extensive knowledge.

Not only that, Cerberus is proficient in all of the mystical arts and has a special talent for reading magical auras. So, not only is he very powerful, but Kero has the brains and mindset that allow him to use those powers wisely. Not bad for a talking animal.

7 He Speaks In The Osaka Dialect

When listening to the original Japanese anime, it’s easy to pick up on the different ways that Cerberus speaks. Kero-chan speaks in an Osaka dialect, a form of Japanese that is known for being very straightforward and containing unique slang.

It’s because the Clow Cards that he protects were in Osaka for an extended period of time that Cerberus picked up this dialect. In the English dub, it was decided that the equivalent of this would be a New York accent. It’s yet another thing that makes Cerberus’ character unique and fun to watch.

6 He Is Closest To Yue

As a fellow guardian, Yue has been there for Cerberus time and time again. They have known each other for the longest time and have worked together on numerous occasions. There is even one continuity that introduces them as brothers.

Although Cerberus had periods of jealousy because he felt that their master favored Yue, Cerberus has still turned to Yue for help as a confidant during difficult situations. He has also shown considerable worry when Yue is in danger. Even with hard times, being with someone for that long can only result in a special bond.

5 His Powers Are Limited

Cerberus, in his true form, is very powerful; he can sense the Clow Cards and their attributes when they are near, breath fire, and summon magical energy barriers to protect himself and his friends. However, when he dons his cute and plush disguise, all those powers are either weakened or gone completely.

There are perks to pretending to be a stuffed animal, one of them being the ability to hide or lay low, but when it comes to battle, only his true form can do real damage. Let’s hope Cerberus never gets stuck in his incognito form.

4 He Controls Elements

While it’s amazing that Cerberus can breathe fire, it’s even more amazing that he literally controls it. He was put in charge of ‘The Fiery,’ his aggressive element, and ‘The Earthy,’ a more passive element in his control. So he can control and has under his jurisdiction, Fire, and Earth. How cool is that?

As the saying goes: with great power comes great responsibility. Clearly, Clow Reed put much faith in Cerberus to give him that much power. So far, Cerberus has proved himself to be not only a competent guardian but also a worthy one. Thank goodness for that!

3 He Has Deep Fears & Worries

Cerberus doesn’t like to dwell on negativity. His favorite thing is “loud fun,” and his least favorite is “being sad or lonely.” Despite this approach, Kero-chan is not as care-free and without inhibition as he seems at first glance.

Cerberus distracts himself with indulgent pass times, but when it comes down to it, he takes things very seriously. While he doesn’t like to wallow in the depressing facts of life, he does not pretend they don’t exist. When it comes time to face the hardships, Cerberus is as ready and willing as any guardian should be.

2 His Powers Come From The Sun

Kero's True Form in Cardcaptors

Ala Superman, Cerberus draws his power and energy from the sun. This is why it isn’t necessary for him to eat, although he indulges his giant sweet tooth anyway. He is able to create his own energy which, let's face it, is pretty darn cool.

This is what makes it possible for Cerberus to breath fire, sense the cards, fly, throw up protective barriers, and borrow the form of a stuffed bear...or is it a stuffed lion? No one can really tell. He’s got more than enough energy to keep going for a lot longer than any of us.

1 He Protects Half Of The Cards

Like The Fiery and Earthy elements, half of the Clow Card deck was left in Cerberus’ protection by his creator Clow Reed. In fact, The Fiery and Earthy elements fall under the umbrella of this jurisdiction, having cards that represent them. A

s a willing and capable servant, he was chosen for this honor based on his intelligence and courage. There are 26 cards in total that Cerberus is in charge of, the other half with his partner and fellow guardian Yue. Together they work to protect the cards and live up to the assignment left to them by their master.
