The following contains major spoilers for Captain Marvel #47, available now from Marvel Comics.

Over the course of her decades long career as a superhero, Carol Danvers has fought alongside some of the most capable figures the Marvel Universe has to offer. Of course, with threats such as the insectile Brood breathing down her neck, Carol could always use whatever help she can get, even if it hurts. This is precisely the case when it comes to Jennifer Takeda, aka Hazmat, who just proved not just why she's the most dangerous Avenger, but why that designation is more of a burden than anything else.

In her mission to rescue a captive Binary, the titular hero of Captain Marvel #47 (by Kelly Thompson, Sergio Dávila, Sean Parsons, Roberto Poggi, Arif Prianto, and VC's Clayton Cowles) and her allies have fallen prey to the Brood all the same. Thankfully, Carol and the others managed to free themselves. But doing so made them realize just how overwhelming the odds truly are. As the Brood bear down on them all over again, Hazmat took it upon herself to end the onslaught with a single, massive display of her powers. One that was almost strong enough to take out Wolverine along with their assailants.

The ability to annihilate the Brood swarm in an instant is certainly one of the biggest displays of power that anyone could offer. But Laura Kinney nearly being obliterated in the process adds a sobering tone that cannot be ignored. Ever since her first appearance in 2010's Avengers Academy #1 (by Christos N. Gage and Mike McKone), it was clear that Hazmat was unlike any of her fellow budding young heroes. Though Jennifer herself is naturally immune to the radioactive, poisonous, and otherwise deadly substances her body produces, she has only ever had temporary control of her abilities. This forced her into her iconic yellow containment suit.

Thanks to her suit, Hazmat has at least been able to find a home on various Avengers lineups, all while exerting a mastery over her powers that is only harmful to her teammates under the worst of circumstances. This hasn't helped her to cope with the isolation she feels on a near-constant basis though. This has caused Hazmat's anxiety regarding the fact that hardly anyone out there can genuinely empathize with her situation. That makes it all the more important that Hazmat has come face-to-face with someone who not only understands but has made a life worth living in spite of it.

Hazmat is Coming to Terms with Her Powers

Working with Rogue may have come at the X-Icon's expense, but it is still an opportunity for Hazmat to talk with someone who is acutely aware of what her situation entails. If nothing else, their conversation is some assurance that Hazmat doesn't need to concern herself with how her powers could define her as a person, especially when she has so much to give beyond them.

With any luck, Hazmat will embrace who she is in her entirety not just as a way of winning the fight at hand, but to come into her own like never before. Because with what she is capable of, and with a war being waged on such a grand scale, there is no reason for Hazmat to hold back in terms of her powers. Now that she has proved what she can really do, there is no reason for her to not step into the spotlight.
