In 2019, Captain Marvel took on all of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in battle in "The Last Avenger" storyline. But Carol Danvers didn't fight her allies willingly. No, the truth was that a Kree villain known as Vox Supreme had trapped her in a powerful black armored suit that forced her to do its bidding. From inside the suit, Carol could only watch as she was forced to turn her powers on her friends, all so she could save the lives of countless Kree refugees on Earth that Vox Supreme threatened to kill. Thankfully, Carol was able to trick the villain and, with some help from the Avengers, she got out of the black suit and defeated Vox Supreme.
When "The Last Avenger" came to a close, Vox Supreme was locked up. But now, in Captain Marvel #32 by Kelly Thompson, Sergio Dávila, Sean Parsons, Jesus Aburtov and VC's Clayton Cowles, the villain returns with a vengeance. And this time, he isn't just going after Carol -- he's going after the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Marvels.
After a brief vacation, Carol Danvers takes back to the skies in Captain Marvel #32. But her return is rapidly interrupted when someone else wearing the dark Captain Marvel suit attacks her. Carol instantly recognizes the suit, and she knows what it means: Vox Supreme is back, and he has likely trapped someone else inside the suit. Carol simply can't know who is inside the suit, but the fact that this person has powers similar to her own shortens the list considerably. However, it's only when she is able to knock her opponent down that Carol finds out the identity of her attacker.
Captain Marvel takes her downed opponent to Tony Stark, and together they come to the conclusion that, after his last defeat, Vox Supreme has made modifications to the dark suit to make it more powerful, removing the weaknesses it once had. Thankfully, Stark is able to pinpoint a frequency that allows for the suit to be removed, revealing that none other than Phyla-Vell, Guardian of the Galaxy, was attacking Captain Marvel against her will. Before she passes out, Phyla gives Carol an ominous warning: "He's... collecting... Marvels."
Instantly, Carol knows exactly what she means. While Phyla-Vell is a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, she also had a stint as, you guessed it, Captain Marvel. And her warning reveals Vox Supreme's plan, as well as his hitlist: Phyla-Vell, Carol Danvers, Spectrum, Noh-Varr and Ms. Marvel.
Carol Danvers blasts away, heading towards New Jersey. There, she hopes to locate the young Kamala Khan, who just might be next. On the way, she makes a call to Monica Rambeau, aka Spectrum, who also went by Captain Marvel for a time. Monica doesn't answer the phone, but Carol leaves her a message, warning her of danger and asking for help.
When she finally arrives to Ms. Marvel's place, Carol finds that she's already too late: the young superhero has been attacked by a handful of others wearing Vox Supreme suits, and one of these suits is beginning to attach itself onto Ms. Marvel. Hopefully, Captain Marvel will have the time to stop the transformation, and save Ms. Marvel from her attackers. If that happens, then Carol and Kamala will join forces (as teased on the cover of Captain Marvel #33), and it's possible they will also be joined by Spectrum once she gets Carol's message.
These three characters are set to be the focus of the MCU's sequel to Captain Marvel, The Marvels, which is set for release in 2022. While we don't yet know the circumstances of the film, we do know that Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel and WandaVision's Monica Rambeau will join forces. But before that happens on the big screen, it looks like all three may unite in "The Last of the Marvels."
