Fans of Marvel Studios' next breakout star, Captain Marvel, finally got their first official peek at Brie Larson as Carol Danvers on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. The images showed Captain Marvel in her current costume from the comics (designed by artist Jamie McKelvie), whereas set photos had Larson in a green suit to match that worn by the Kree warriors.

McKelvie created Captain Marvel's new costume in 2012 for her new title by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, putting Carol in something more fitting a member of the military, compared to what she wore as Ms. Marvel. The change in uniform also brought with it the upgrade to the Captain Marvel moniker, putting Carol on the respect level as Steve Rogers' Captain America. The costume upgrade also inspired fans to cosplay as Captain Marvel and gave birth to the Carol Corps legion of fans.

Of course, there is much more to Carol Danvers' superhero attire than a change from minimal spandex to a full-body suit. When Captain Marvel is soaring through the spaceways, a helmet will pop up to cover her face. The helmet also has another mode that allows her hair to be exposed in a mohawk hairstyle.

The first trailer for Captain Marvel arrived early this morning and provided more background to Carol's origin story, but the most fascinating portions may be the first look at Captain Marvel's full armor. Plucked straight from the comics, Captain Marvel and her Starforce fighting squad swim into battle with helmet and mohawk on full display.

Safety First

Around the 1:35 mark of the trailer is our first look at Captain Marvel's battle-ready helmet, as the hero and the Kree Starforce are on an alien planet (the Kree homeworld, perhaps) swimming underwater towards an unknown destination or target.

The Kree soldiers around her all have similar helmets that leave the lower half of their faces exposed, with a blue energy field allowing them to breathe underwater. The helmet is a pretty comics-accurate recreation, with a section carved out for the ears and the eye slits glowing with white light.

What really makes Captain Marvel's unique is the mohawk that rests atop the head. The underwater scene shows Carol's exposed hair flowing freely, which again comes straight from the comics -- the 2012 redesign of the character also included a new hairstyle for Captain Marvel which was incorporated into her overall superhero look as well.

The only slight change for Captain Marvel from film to comics is her full armor only makes an appearance when she's in her Kree costume. The only time we see Carol in her Captain Marvel attire comes near the end of the trailer as she unleashes her Binary set of powers. Of course, this could be Marvel Studios' way of saving some secrets for future trailers, but we do have to wonder if the red, blue and yellow costume will reveal Captain Marvel's armor form.

With the majority of action scenes showing Captain Marvel in her Kree suit, it raises the question of how will she gain her updated attire? The film will introduce the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D. with a de-aged Nick Fury and Agent Coulson, so perhaps once Carol connects with the top-secret spy organization and hopefully regains her Earth memories (the trailer alludes to Carol not remembering her past on Earth), they take her Kree costume and give it a color makeover. If Captain Marvel is going to go into battle against her former Kree comrades, it makes sense to make her look different from those she's fighting.
