Captain Marvel is one of the strongest heroes in almost every version of the Marvel Universe she appears in. Both the comics and film versions of the character have proven to be tough enough to go toe-to-toe with the most powerful forces in the known universe. But while there are obviously similarities between the two versions, there are plenty of ways they differ, ranging from the source of their abilities to the scope of their skills.

Which leads us -- and other fans -- to ask, which version of Carol Danvers is more powerful, the original comic book incarnation, or her MCU counterpart?

Marvel Comics' Captain Marvel

The Carol Danvers of the mainline Marvel Universe was introduced during the original Captain Marvel series. The comic still starred the Kree hero Mar-Vell at that point, and Carol played a minor supporting role before being put in a coma by an exploding Kree device known as the Psyche-Magnetron.

But when the character returned almost a decade later, she came back with some impressive powers. The destruction of the Psyche-Magnetron remolded Danvers' genetic structure to meld with Captain Marvel's, effectively turning her into a human-Kree hybrid with super strength and endurance. After her powers were stripped from her by (the then villainous) future X-Man Rougue, Carol received an entirely new kind of power boost thanks to experimentation by the alien race known as the Brood, which allowed her to absorb energy and fly of her own volition.

Reinvented with the cosmic power of a white hole, Carol took up the title of Binary, and although she eventually lost full connection with those powers, she retained some of her new abilities. Carol then went through a number of name changes over the years, before finally adopting the title of Captain Marvel for herself. Her powers kept growing with use, and as she's risen in prominence within the comics, so to has her power increased. She's gone toe-to-toe with the Hulk, stood up to Thanos, and has proven invaluable to the protection of humanity in events like InfinitySecret Wars and Secret Empire.

Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel

The MCU version of Captain Marvel is a much more straightforward take on the character, with more specific abilities. Instead of a Kree device serving as the source of her powers, the MCU's Carol Danvers was bombarded with energy from the Space Stone. This power boost changes the kind of limits that she potentially has, tying her to the pure cosmic power of an Infinity Stone.

While her full limits are unknown (she has only appeared in one film so far), she's been hyped by Marvel as the MCU's most powerful hero, and has already performed a good number of impressive feats. Carol proved too powerful for the best Kree power dampeners, and single-handily destroyed massive Kree flagships. By the end of Captain Marvel, she's flying into the cosmos alongside a spaceship at speeds that exceed anything on Earth.

Who's Tougher?

It's difficult to say for certain which version of Carol Danvers is stronger. There's been so little of her in the MCU at this point that she could always surprise audiences with some new ability in a future film. With Kevin Feige calling her the most powerful figure in the MCU, it seems clear she's in a weight class above other unstoppable heroes like Hulk and Thor.

Meanwhile, the comics version of Carol has also been shown as being incredibly powerful. She's performed moves similar to those that occurr in Captain Marvel, such as bringing down massive war ships just on her own. But she's also been established as not quite being the strongest force in the universe.

Comics Carol has been knocked out and captured in events as recent as Infinity, and was seemingly overloaded with power by Norman Osborn in Dark Reign. During Jonathan Hickman's run on New Avengers, Carol was shown not quite being able to bring down the Hulk before he could knock her straight into space. The comics Captain Marvel has certainly been through many more battles than the MCU version, and that means she's going to have more losses under her belt than the movie incarnation. But while her powers have been modified over the years, it's never been by anything that has as much pure cosmic significance as an Infinity Stone. Being powered by a White Hole is pretty impressive, but the Space Stone is simply a bigger deal.

Given the kind of powers she's already exhibited, it's possible, perhaps even likely, that the MCU version of Carol Danvers exceeds anything that the comics version of the character ever could manage. The movie version of the character might just be the strongest take on Captain Marvel ever, and her appearance in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame will likely see her achieve even more impressive feats.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as the commander of Starforce, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, Algenis Perez Soto as Att-Lass, McKenna Grace as a young Carol Danvers and Annette Bening as the Supreme Intelligence/Mar-Vell. The film arrives is currently in theaters.
