WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Captain Marvel #21 by Kelly Thompson, Cory Smith, Adriano Di Benedetto, Tamra Bonvillain and VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

At the start of Al Ewing and Valero Schiti's Empyre event, Captain Marvel was given the Universal Weapon and named the new Kree Supreme Accuser by the Emperor of the Kree/Skrull Alliance, Hulkling. Her first task was to locate the person responsible for the destruction of a peaceful city where both Kree and Skrulls lived in harmony. Carol traveled to K'in-al, where she found that the person believed to be guilty of the sanctuary city's destruction was her Kree half-sister, Lauri-Ell.

After realizing that her sister wasn't guilty, Carol hid Lauri-Ell on Earth, assembled her own Accuser Corps thanks to some help from Doctor Strange and found the real person responsible: the villain known as Wastrel. Now, in Captain Marvel #21, the war with the Cotati reaches an end and Carol relinquishes her duties as Supreme Accuser.

But someone else is chosen to replace her: her sister, Lauri-Ell.

In Captain Marvel #20, after Carol and her team of cosmic Avengers comprised of War Machine, Spider-Woman and Hazmat defeated Wastrel, they were called back to Earth, where Lauri-Ell was facing off with an entire legion of Cotati. Now, issue #21 begins with Lauri still in battle with the plant-like aliens and although their numbers prove too great for her, she is rapidly rescued by Captain Marvel's Accuser Corps.

Thanks to their respective fragments of the Universal Weapon, all members of Carol's team are powerhouses, and they are all able to use their new abilities to push the Cotati back. Unfortunately, their help doesn't last long. As they fight, the spell that originally splintered the Universal Weapon wears off, and they lose the extra protection and powers that it granted them. Even Carol herself is swarmed by the Cotai, and she loses hold of the cosmic hammer.

With no one left to help, Lauri-Ell takes it upon herself to wield the Universal Weapon. As soon as she lifts it, its power gives her a new costume -- one that looks a lot like Ronan the Accuser's outfit. As the newest Accuser, Lauri-Ell fights alongside Captain Marvel, War Machine, Spider-Woman and Hazmat until the Cotati are defeated.

However, with the war at the heart of Empyre still raging all over the Earth, Captain Marvel's services are still needed by the Kree/Skrull Alliance and because of that, Lauri gives the hammer back to her sister so she may resume her duties as Hulkling's Supreme Accuser.

Captain Marvel #21 then jumps ahead a few weeks to the end of the war. Carol is at her new underground base in Harpswell. She is back in her classic red, blue and gold uniform, getting ready for her next mission when she is startled by Lauri-Ell, who teleports in thanks to the Universal Weapon.

At this point it becomes official: Lauri-Ell has been named the new Kree Supreme Accuser by Hulkling.

Carol Danvers' time as the Supreme Accuser was always going to be temporary. But now, her half-sister Lauri-Ell has taken on the mantle. With this, Lauri has just become one of the most important figures in the new Kree/Skrull Empire, and is sure to be seen again in Marvel's upcoming cosmic titles.
