Captain Marvel enjoyed the second biggest premiere night for a superhero movie introducing a new character, pulling in $20.7 million for its Thursday night debut. Carol Danvers' origin story earnings put it just behind Black Panther, which earned approximately $25 million on its opening night.

The film also performed well compared to superhero movies starring already known protagonists, including Avengers: Infinity War ($39 million), The Dark Knight Rises ($30.1 million), Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($27.7 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($27.6 million) and Captain America: Civil War ($25 million), the opening night totals for which are not adjusted for inflation.
