WARNING: Spoilers follow for Captain Marvel #24 by Kelly Thompson, Lee Garbett, Belen Ortega, Antonio Fabela, and VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

Captain Marvel has gone into the future and found the world devastated from wars that humanity lost. In the wake of these defeats, the surviving heroes began to disappear one by one. And in Captain Marvel #24, the titular Avengers learns what happened to them.

The path to learn what happened to the heroes led to Ove, the son of Namor, who had taken control of the New York City Public Library and turned it into a paradise, a place where pollution and toxins did not enter and where the people who lived under his rule could do so safely. The problem is that Captain Marvel also learned that this utopia was based on the powers of the missing heroes.

Ove had teamed with his mother, the Enchantress, to create this world. He has taken several superheroes, and using his mother's mystic powers, has them powering what he calls New Atlantis. Now Carol learns that she might be the latest captive. The first missing hero is Armor, the former member of the X-Men. Brigid Thorsdottir mentioned her, and Namor said that Armor was there voluntarily but that they couldn't talk to her at this time. With her power, she can create an enormously powerful and impenetrable psionic exoskeleton armor around herself. Carol mentions that it is clear Armor provides the dome to protect New Atlants from the radiation.

When Carol asks about Armor providing protection from outside toxins, she also asks how there is power in New Atlantis. Ove said that comes from a superhero known as Jolt. Hallie Takahama was the first hero that Ove came across when he tried to build his new utopia. Jolt was a former member of the Thunderbolts, and she was enhanced with biokinetic energy after she was resurrected by Techno.  Next, Carol asked how there is weather inside New Atlantis, considering the dome that Armor built. For this, Ove said the woman behind the weather is the person who gave him the original idea for New Atlantis. He said they call her Gaia (in Greek mythology, Gaia is the personification of the Earth and the ancestral mother of all life). However, her real name is Crystal of the Inhumans. Her powers allow her to control fire, water, earth, and air.

While Luke Cage does not provide anything to keep the city running, it is clear that he serves one other major purpose. Controlled by the Enchantress, he is the muscle for New Atlantis and proved his worth when he beat Carol Danvers into unconsciousness in the latest issue. The biggest shock came at the end, when Carol and her friends found Magik bound and captured by Ove and Enchantress. Illyana Rasputin is a teleporter, the ruler of Limbo, and a master magician. She is also a slave to New Atlantis and is likely the key that holds everything together. It also appears that Magik is who brought Carol to the future, although she said she tried not to do it. Her powers also call forth the demons from Limbo to serve Ove and Enchantress.

That leaves Captain Marvel herself as the final piece of the puzzle. The two had the demons of limbo attack and then sent Luke Cage to take out Carol. When the fight ended, Ove said he had more heroes to find uses for, but said that Captain Marvel was the most important piece of Ove's plans for the future.
