In Captain Marvel, the galactic enemy of the Kree, known as the Skrulls, have discovered Earth. These shape-shifters have reportedly been hiding in plain sight amongst the unassuming public, but according to actor Ben Mendelsohn, they’ve learned enough about Earth culture to recognize their skills and have no problem with making it clear for everybody.

During a recent visit attended by Screen Rant and other outlets, actor Ben Mendelsohn, who portrays Skrull commander Talos had this to say on the behalf of the Skrull empire:

“I'm Talos. I'm the battle commander of the Skrulls. I take it most of you know who Skrulls are? We kind of rule the shit. Most of the rest of the Marvel comic universe are punks basically. And I guess to quote Snoop Dogg, we are the shiznit. We stand above. I mean, look, we can be anyone, and we're stronger than the rest of them. Basically that's it. Yeah, we're maligned, we're misunderstood. But, you know, we're Skrulls. We're Skrullin. Any other questions?”

Captain Marvel marks the first big-screen appearance for the Skrulls. The alien race was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four #2 and the originally mercantile civilization expanded into free trade and mutual cooperation with other worlds until hostilities between the Kree erupted into full-scale war between both empires. Although the Avengers intervention effectively ended "The Kree-Skrull War," Earth would become a target that the Skrulls would repeatedly attempt to conquer over the years. Countless intergalactic conflicts and events would decimate the Skrull populace to the point where the empire invested considerable effort and resources in a “Secret Invasion," where the Skrulls kidnapped and impersonated a number of Marvel heroes and villains over a long period of time, hoping the planet would serve as a new homeworld. Unfortunately, their invasion failed and the Skrull numbers and power dwindled even more.

Despite S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain Marvel working to prevent the war from claiming Earth, Mendelsohn's reference to the popular rapper Snoop Dogg is incredibly topical. With the movie set in 1995, the successful rapper, producer, actor and movie star's 1993 debut album Doggystyle would have reach quadruple platinum status and he would have released his second album, a soundtrack to the movie Murder Was the Case, starring himself, in 1994.
