Captain Marvel was a film that touched on the theme of legacy, so it makes sense that Captain Marvel 2 will truly showcase that in a perfect, succinct manner. Carol Danvers is partially responsible for the formation of the Avengers, rejected the legacy of her Kree superiors and managed to inspire Monica Rambeau. Now, going into Captain Marvel 2, it seems fitting that both Monica and newcomer Kamala Khan are confirmed to appear in the sequel.

The upcoming Captain Marvel 2 can showcase Carol grappling with the ideas surrounding legacy, with her reuniting with Monica while also meeting Kamala. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has not avoided the theme of legacy characters, this project could be a direct showcase of the various ways the past can branch in different, unexpected directions.

KAMALA KHAN & MONICA RAMBEAU

Carol Danvers' influence on both Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan is drastically different. Monica is personally affected by Carol, having grown up with her in her life. This sort of formative experience no doubt had a huge impact on her development. However, when Monica was a kid, there were few known superheroes (Captain America, Ant-Man and the Wasp being the only examples). By contrast, Kamala grew up in an era of heroes and was inspired by Carol.

The film can analyze how the two characters were inspired by Carol, but also how they are both very different in terms of their experiences, lives and points of view. On one hand, this might offer a point of conflict between them, since both might have a sense of ownership over their personal experiences and might not see eye-to-eye. However, that element that binds Monica and Kamala together might allow them to see through the generational gaps and perspective divisions.

CAROL'S LEGACY

Much of the first Captain Marvel film dealt with how cultures can brainwash a person. Carol had to disentangle herself from her Kree influences in order to see the world as it truly was. In the sequel, however, she will have to grapple with the fact that she has influenced other characters. While she already saw this to an extent when finding Monica in her first film, she has never met Kamala, meaning she will have to come to terms with how she is influencing people who do not know her.

However, most interesting of all, Carol might end up being confronted with a conflict she cannot overpower, which means she will need help. This might force three generations of heroes to work together in order to confront an obstacle that is simply too much for one hero to handle. This will establish the multi-generational legacy of the MCU going forward, forcing several heroes with different views and from different backgrounds to work together.
