Marvel Studio's Captain Marvel saw Carol Danvers take to the big screen for the first time. For a large portion of the movie, she is working with the Kree Empire and therefore wears a suit of their design.

This fantastic look of course gets modified a little to become the suit of Captain Marvel. The iconic suit takes a lot of cues from the comics, but the Kree variation needed to say a lot not only about the character herself but the society she serves and functions within. The creative team at Marvel therefore included many hidden details that could have gone unnoticed.

10 Guardian's Inspired Shielding

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has started to develop a visual language that each movie must be aware of. For the shielding of Captain Marvel's face when in space or underwater, the production team looked to the Guardians.

Since this is another science fiction film within the MCU, it makes sense that elements are shared between the two. Captain Marvel's mouth is covered by the same blue hexagonal shielding that can be seen on the protective body suits of the Guardians.

9 Camouflage

A huge hero moment for Carol during the course of the film is when she finally gets her Captain Marvel colors. Thanks to the help of Monica Rambeau, the famous look was born.

But the functionality of this costume feature is likely more than just to inspire a costume change. This is clearly a built-in camouflage system that the military can use to try to blend in with the surroundings. In many ways, it parallels the Skrulls shape-shifting abilities.

8 Kree Unity

The Kree are an incredibly powerful race of aliens, with a huge Empire that they rule with an iron fist. The Starforce Unit that Captain Marvel is a part of symbolizes the greatest warriors of their people.

There is a lot of similarities between all the suits as it demonstrates Kree unity and strength. The costumes themselves are also like superhero suits, because to the Kree, they are almost celebrities and need to be inspirational.

7 Individual Symbols

carol as kree soldier

Captain Marvel's symbol of course matches the Kree star that has given the Starforce Unit their name. It also matches the symbol of the United States military and a T-shirt that Monica wears in the film.

Despite the fact that all the Kree soldiers are sporting star symbols, each one is actually unique. They have slightly different designs to reflect the personality or the background of the warrior sporting them.

6 Hala Colors

The military suits seen throughout the MCU for the Kree are usually in darker colors, but the Starforce sport the green tones of the nation. These are the colors often associated with Hala.

Unlike characters like Ronan, who seem to be rogue elements, the Starforce answer directly to the Kree planet and therefore share the colors linked to them, becoming a national symbol.

5 Warrior Class

Other Kree warriors across the MCU have had starkly different costumes. While the color scheme has also been mentioned, the militarisation of the suits is quite stark.

Whereas many Kree warriors have been seen in brown leather clothing, or perhaps even black form-fitting costumes, these suits are militarised because they are an elite force unlike any other within the empire.

4 Supreme Comparisons

The Supreme Intelligence

The Supreme Intelligence is the leader of the Kree Empire. She's one of the main villains of the film and will likely play a large part in any sequel that the MCU creates.

When the Supreme Intelligence is seen within a Kree costume however, she shares the same star symbol as Captain Marvel. The Supreme Intelligence appears to everyone differently, so clearly Carol still in some way links that symbol to the Empire she wishes to destroy. Perhaps she is now trying to change the meaning of this star.

3 Liquid Leather

For both the real life, physical creation of the suit and within the context of the universe, a kind of liquid leather was used in order to create the structure and base of the suit.

This foundation feels a little alien in design, but clearly combines Earth based military technology as well. Leather, in terms of jackets and other equipment is associated with the military, but this material is also far more compliant to movement and agility.

2 Practical Hair Technology

In the comics, Captain Marvel has a famous mohawk hairstyle that was included by the artists for a bet. The movie tries to incorporate this design in a practical way.

Replicating technology seen in Star-Lords helmet, the helmet and mask she wears pushes up the hair when it is formed. The practical purpose of the mohawk is clearly to keep the hair out of her face in the midst of battle.

1 Ranks

On Captain Marvels shoulders there are a number of lines. These are visible in both the Kree and the red and gold variations of the suit. There's another military explanation for this design choice.

These lines represent the rank of each of the warriors. Some of the other Kree have these lines somewhere on their costume and Vers was clearly proud of her rank at the time, sporting it clearly on her arm.
