A strange new Captain Marvel ad from E! reveals that Keeping Up with the Kardashians' Kris Jenner played a role in Carol's origin story.
Uploaded on Jenner's Instagram account, the ad begins with Jenner and Lisa Rinna in 1990s Los Angeles, returning some videos to Blockbuster. Just as Rinna is about to enter the store, Carol falls through the roof of Blockbuster from space, much to the women's shock.
Upon Rinna seeing a woman amidst the rubble, Jenner tells her friend to help the mysterious stranger. Rinna only responds that she's "an actress, not a doctor" while Carol helps herself up. As Carol stands, Rinna says that it looks like she doesn't need any help. According to Jenner, what Carol needs is her own movie. After she pulls out her cellphone to make that film happen, clips from the movie play.
While certainly a strange promotion, the ad does seem to be fully aware of how silly and nonsensical it is, with a fictional superhero meeting two celebrities from the real world. Then again, Spider-Man once met the cast of Saturday Night Live, so this happening in any version of the Marvel Universe doesn't seem out of the question!
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau. The film arrives Mar. 8.
