UPDATE 12/27/18 2:49 PM: Disney's Captain Marvel website has since been updated to remove any reference to "Mar-Vell." CBR's original story remains unaltered below.

It's official: Jude Law will play Mar-Vell in Captain Marvel.

Disney stealthily revealed the news on its Captain Marvel website. In a slideshow of previously seen photos from the film, a caption describes Law's character as "Mar-Vell, the leader of Starforce." Though Law has long been rumored to play the character, this is the first official confirmation of his role.

Mar-Vell, who was the original Captain Marvel, is a member of the Kree race. In the comics, a Kree device called the Psyche-Magnitron tapped into Carol's subconscious desire to become a superhero and stole energy from Mar-Vell's Nega Bands in order to transform her into a superhuman. After her transformation, he mentored her as she grew into her powers and she took the moniker Ms. Marvel in his honor. The two were longtime friends, up until his death in the early 1980s.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Starforce Commander, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau. The film arrives March 8, 2019.
