Captain Marvel Isn't In "Avengers: Age Of Ultron," But She Came Really Close

Despite persistent rumors to the contrary, it's confirmed that Captain Marvel won't have a cameo in "Avengers: Age of Ultron." However, it turns out the fan-favorite superhero came really close -- so close that director Joss Whedon filmed FX footage of her in flight.

Speaking with Badass Digest, Marvel Studios Kevin Feige explained the rationale for excluding Carol Danvers from "Age of Ultron," rather than introducing her at the very end. (Caution: A minor spoiler for the film follows.)

"[T]o me, it would have done that character a disservice, to meet her fully formed, in a costume and part of the Avengers already when 99 percent of the audience would go, 'Who is that?'" he said. "It's just not the way we've done it before."

Captain Marvel's FX shots didn't go to waste, however. "The way we reveal Scarlet Witch [in costume] at the end of the movie?" Feige said. "Those were Captain Marvel plate shots."

The character will receive plenty of screen time in July 2018 with the release of her solo film, which looks to be written by Nicole Perlman ("Guardians of the Galaxy") and Meg LeFauvre ("Inside Out").

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" opens May 1, without Carol Danvers.
