Captain Marvel will be going hard on the ‘90s aesthetic, apparently. It has been known for some time that the film will be set in the ‘90s, but it was recently revealed that some of the movie’s fight sequences will be inspired by action films of the era, like Terminator 2.
Terminator 2 is, of course, one of the most iconic action films of all time. The movie’s influence can still be felt to this day, so it’s no surprise that Captain Marvel will take that inspiration and run with it. What is surprising is just how much emphasis is being put on street level fights, even though much of the film will take place in space.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently elaborated on how Captain Marvel would marry its ‘90s setting to the action film aesthetics of the era.
“Well, not necessarily talking about any particulars of the story, but the action elements [of] Terminator 2,” Feige said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “That’s about as iconic as you get, looking at kind of those cool street level fights, street level car chases and fun stuff like that. That being said, much of the movie takes place in outer space, as you might think a Captain Marvel movie would. Like all of our genre inspirations, there are bits and pieces here and there.”
Debuting in theaters on March 8, 2019, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Walter Lawson/Mar-Vell and Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva.
