The cast of Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel is slowly but surely growing, with Gemma Chan boarding the project as Minn-Erva.

Deadline reported Monday that Humans actor Chan will play a Kree geneticist and spy, also known in Marvel Comics as Doctor Minerva. It's unclear at this point how Chan's character will fit into the story, which sees Brie Larson's Carol Danvers turn from Air Force pilot to superhero in the '90s. If the movie follows the source material, Minn-Erva will travel to earth to find Captain Mar-Vell (played in the film by Jude Law). In the comics, the character has a similar skill set to Captain Marvel: superhuman strength, flight and energy projection.

Chan is next set to appear in Crazy Rich Asians alongside Constance Wu, and Mary Queen of Scots opposite Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan. She joins the cast of Captain Marvel alongside Larson, Law, Samuel L. Jackson, DeWanda Wise, and Ben Mendelsohn. Chan has experience in major genre films, having appeared in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Minn-Erva was created by Scott Edelman and Al Milgrom, and first seen in 1977's Captain Marvel #50.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a screenplay by Nicole Perlman, Meg LeFauve and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel is scheduled to debut in theaters on March 8, 2019.
