WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Captain Marvel #24 by Kelly Thompson, Lee Garbett, Belen Ortega, Antonio Fabela, and VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

Carol Danvers has been getting an intimate look at the future, and it is bleak. Somehow transported over thirty years forward in time, Carol has discovered a world that she already sacrificed her own life to save, one that is still barely holding itself together. The enigmatic Ove has control of some of her oldest and closest allies, and the only ones left to stand against them are those few that remain in this frozen, crumbling wasteland. Still, there are others waiting to be found or, in the case of Captain Marvel #24, rescued.

In the middle of what remains of New York City, between the broken pavement and devastated skyscrapers, is an apparent paradise on Earth, all under the watchful eye of Ove. It's there that Carol Danvers, along with several of her mostly new allies are greeted by Ove himself, the recently revealed son of Namor and the Asgardian Enchantress. He explains that his private oasis is provided by the selfless volunteer work provided by various other superpowered beings, including the X-Men veteran Armor, Inhuman Crystal, and former Thunderbolt Jolt taking care of the sanctuary's protective forcefield, climate, and energy needs respectively.

Of course, this friendly narrative doesn't line up with what Carol has been told by the other survivors, nor what she's experienced for herself so far. Skeptical but inquisitive, Carol agrees to a private meeting with Ove in the hopes of understanding the situation better. He tells her of his childhood in Atlantis, bearing witness to the successful assassination of his father, the King of Atlantis, forcing Ove and his mother to flee. On the surface they found Jolt, then others with powers, and decided to rebuild on the surface, putting those abilities to use creating their own society.

After more than an hour of Ove's droning, Carol finally has an opportunity to reunite with her team and plan their next steps. That night, after the settlement has gone quiet, they sneak underground in the hopes that they might find whatever it is that Ove is hiding. It isn't long before the group comes to a massive vault door, which Carol is more than happy to open. There they find a dark room, two figures hanging from the walls in the corners by their wrists, and a third shackled to the floor, with some sort of energy radiating off of their chains. Illyana Rasputin is the one in the center of the room, and the Ruler of Limbo is now just another slave of her captors.

Illyana is lost in her own mind, not believing who she is seeing before her until she is able to come to grips with what is happening in the moment. A heartfelt reunion is shattered by Illyana warning them that it is too late, that Ove knows already, and she is right on both counts.

Before they can rescue Magik or make their own exit, the group is cornered by Ove and the Enchantress, the latter of which has complete control over the minds of her captives, including Luke Cage. Carol puts up a good fight, but is eventually captured and wakes up bound alongside the other heroes. It is unsure what Ove and the Enchantress want with Carol, but if it's anything like what has been done with the other heroes, it can't possibly be good.
