Any early design of the Skrulls, who made their first Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance in 2019's Captain Marvel, showed that the green aliens once looked a little less friendly.

Shared in Instagram by Marvel Visual Development Supervisor Ian Joyner, the image features two Skrulls with much thinner heads and longer ears than the versions shown in Captain Marvel. "Early skrull soldier/grunt designs for Captain Marvel from before we had any real direction for them," said Joyner on the post with the image.

While the Skrulls only recently made their debut in the MCU, the race of shapeshifters date back to 1962 when they first appeared in Fantastic Four #2. Created by comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Skrulls have been featured in many Marvel comic storylines and animated television shows.

Though the main Skrull to appear in Captain Marvel was Talos the Untamed (Ben Mendelsohn), the character's wife Soren (Sharon Blynn) also shows up during the film. Mendelsohn and Blynn would reprise their roles during a mid-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home that revealed the two Skrulls had been impersonating Nick Fury and Maria throughout the duration of the film. The scene also revealed that the real Nick Fury had actually been on a Skrull spaceship, hinting that the extraterrestrials may play a big part in the MCU's future.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the first Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Clark Gregg, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch and Algenis Perez Soto, with Annette Bening as the Supreme Intelligence. The film is now available on Digital HD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD.
