Newly unearthed concept art from the upcoming Captain Marvel has revealed that one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's biggest heroes could secretly be a shapeshifting alien Skrull: Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury.

The image, found on Reddit, is allegedly a sneak peek at a page from Marvel's Captain Marvel: The Art of the Movie, and clearly shows a Skrull morphing into Fury with his signature black jacket and eye patch. However, as a few users pointed out, this theory could have some holes in it.

Since Captain Marvel is set in the '90s, a Skrull shapeshifting into Fury would be a pre-Avengers version of the war hero. However, others have indicated that maybe a Skrull morphed into Fury after Captain Marvel, hinting that maybe the Fury we've seen leading the Avengers initiative and who got dusted in Infinity War could've been a Skrull all this time.

If the latter turns out to be the case, it'll be intriguing to find out why he still assembled Earth's Mightiest Heroes, with theorists positing he could have wanted to safeguard Earth for a future Skrull invasion. Until we see the film, we won't know anything for sure, but it's always good to remember that concept art doesn't necessarily reflect what will happen on-screen and that this could simply be one of several ideas considered while the film was in its early stages.
