Captain Marvel: 10 Characters Confirmed To Appear (And 10 That We Want To See)

Captain Marvel Brie Larson Powers Up Glow

Before Wonder Woman became a blockbuster movie for DC, we had to settle for sub-par versions of Supergirl, Catwoman and Elektra on the big screen. Unfortunately, this is the film industry mimicking the comic book world, where it's rare that a solo female title has as much longevity as male characters such as Iron Man, Spider-Man and Batman. However, this is changing ever so slowly, as publishers and film houses are realizing that audiences both like and want more female-driven content, as long as it's executed properly. Wonder Woman was the perfect blend of origin story, period piece and love story bound together with spot-on acting, smart storytelling and just enough action for things to not get boring. While this is certainly a feat that would be hard to replicate, Marvel is going to give it a shot in 2019 with Captain Marvel.

Scheduled to be released on March 8th, 2019, just ahead of Avengers: Endgame in April, Captain Marvel stars Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson in the title role. The movie takes place in the 90's, which is way before anything in the modern-day MCU takes place, so in a way we're seeing both the origin of Captain Marvel and the MCU. The film will have an intergalactic feel to it, taking place on Earth, as well as outer space, particularly the Kree's homeworld. CBR takes a look at some of the characters that will be joining her, as well as some that we'd love to see make an appearance.

20 CONFIRMED: NICK FURY

Played by Samuel L. Jackson, Nick Fury has been a part of the modern-day MCU from the very beginning. As the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fury was responsible for pulling together the original team of Avengers that included Captain America, Iron Man, and Black Widow.

In Captain Marvel, we see a much younger Fury, who is in possession of both of his eyes, possibly losing faith in S.H.I.E.L.D.. However, that changes when he meets Captain Marvel. From the trailer, it appears as though Fury and Carol will be helping each other; her with his Skrull problem and him helping her uncover her life on Earth.

19 WANT TO SEE: ADAM WARLOCK

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Adam Warlock

In the original Infinity War/Infinity Gauntlet storylines, Adam Warlock played a key role in the comic books as a celestial being who possessed the Infinity Soul Gem (referred to as stones in the MCU). He was a hero who often worked closely with the Avengers, the original Captain Marvel, and Moondragon, usually against Thanos.

Adam Warlock's appearance has been hinted in various MCU films including Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy and, particularly, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in which Adam's cocoon in shown in possession of the ruthless Ayesha. It would be interesting to see a possible earlier version of the character, pre-cocoon.

18 CONFIRMED: PHIL COULSON

Clark Gregg Phil Coulson

A stalwart member of S.H.I.E.L.D., Philip J. Coulson gained notoriety as the victim in the original Avengers movie that actually gave the team something to avenge. Shortly thereafter, with a trip to Tahiti, Coulson was revived and heading up his own team in the Avengers' television spin-off, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

While we don't know about Coulson's role in the movie, so far it appears as though he will be acting as Fury's right-hand man, basically being Marie Hill's predecessor. With Coulson's involvement, fans are clamoring for some serious AOS Easter eggs, but more on that later.

17 WANT TO SEE: THANOS

Here's the thing, we all know what happened when the Avengers went up against Thanos and we know that we've been told that Captain Marvel is probably the key to defeating him the second time around. While we are getting insight into Carol's backstory, it would be cool to have a nod to what Thanos was up to during the '90s.

Was he still plotting his plans to change the galaxy? Perhaps this takes place during the same time of Gamora's planet being conquered by him. We will be looking for Easter Eggs and a connection to Thanos should definitely be one.

16 CONFIRMED: RONAN

Previously appearing as the main antagonist in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Ronan, played by award-winning actor Lee Pace, returns as a commander of the Kree Empire. Ronan was taken out by the Guardians upon their utilization of the Power Stone, one of the first outer-space appearances of any Infinity Stone.

In Captain Marvel, it appears as though the Kree strikeforce Carol is a part of actually answers to Ronan, which would make sense, considering the team is made up of militaristic Kree. It will be interesting to see if he actually turns out to be the Big Bad of the movie or not.

15 WANT TO SEE: DOCTOR STRANGE

Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch

In Avengers: Infinity War, there is a particularly important scene in which Doctor Strange travels to the future to view the multiple outcomes of the battle against Thanos. He ominously reports that out of millions, there was only one way the heroes would come out on top.

Wouldn't it be cool if Dr. Strange flashes through the '90s at some point while he is researching that outcome? He could be an apparition that Fury briefly sees or even appear in Carol's dreams, since we know she will be having memory problems. A direct link to that scene from Infinity War would drive audiences wild.

14 CONFIRMED: KORATH

Djimon Hounsou as Korath

Another previously seen member of the Kree, Korath also appeared in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie as Ronan's second-in-command. He is defeated in battle by Drax and Gamora, who was fighting with Nebula at the same time, with a fate never fully revealed, which left him open to additional appearances later.

Played by Djimon Hounsou, Korath is also younger in Captain Marvel, though he still retains much of the same stoic demeanor from his first appearance. Here he is a mercenary and a member of the Kree Starforce. Perhaps we will see some foreshadowing with his character.

13 WANT TO SEE: HANK PYM

In the comic books, Hank Pym was a founding member of the Avengers as Ant-Man and the husband of Janet van Dyne, the Wasp. Pym is responsible for engineering some of the more prominent gadgets and modes of transportation the Avengers use. He is credited with creating the first Quinjet.

In the MCU, Hank Pym is portrayed by Michael Douglas and was Ant-Man, but was never a founding member of the Avengers. It's quite possible for Hank to be featured in Captain Marvel, possibly working with S.H.I.E.L.D. on projects to help defend Earth from the Skrulls.

12 CONFIRMED: MINN-ERVA

In the comic books, Minn-Erva is actually Dr. Minerva, a villainous Kree geneticist who often works with, and later marries, fellow Kree Captain Atlas. Dr. Minerva is known as being an enemy of various Earth-based heroes including Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel, the Avengers and Alpha Flight.

In the MCU, Minn-Erva is a member of the Kree Starforce and apparently a hot-shot sniper who gets jealous when Carol steals the spotlight from her on the team. It will be interesting to see if they allude to her comic book counterpart's scientific side, or keep her as a vindictive soldier.

11 WANT TO SEE: MELINDA MAY

phil-coulson-melinda-may-agents-of-shield

One of the many characters created solely for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series, Agent Melinda May is Phil Coulson's longtime friend, confidante and, most recently, lover. A fiercely loyal member of S.H.I.E.L.D., May thrived in the field until a tragic incident in Bahrain changed her life forever.

Melinda May is played to perfection by Ming-Na Wen and has become the team's second-in-command many times over the course of the series. She is included in multiple flashbacks to Coulson's early years with S.H.I.E.L.D. so it would be nice to at least get a cameo appearance of her.

10 CONFIRMED: TALOS

Known as Talos the Untamed in the comic books, he is a member of the Skrull alien race. However, unlike most of his species, he did not develop the mutation to allow him to shapeshift, but rather his mutation gave him superhuman strength. He frequently appeared in battles against the Fantastic Four, Avengers and X-Men.

In Captain Marvel, Talos is played by Ben Mendelsohn and leads the Skrull attack on Earth. From what we've seen in the trailers, it's possible the movie is borrowing heavily from 2008's Secret Invasion storyline in which it is revealed several citizens and heroes of Earth had been replaced by Skrulls.

9 WANT TO SEE: PEGGY CARTER

Peggy Carter Haley Atwell

One of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D., Peggy Carter was an agent long into her golden years before passing in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. Peggy has made multiple appearances in the MCU, including her own eponymous television series that lasted two seasons on ABC.

What we didn't get to see a lot of was Peggy's later life, after she had retired from field work but was still a part of S.H.I.E.L.D.. This would be an excellent opportunity to explore that time in her life, possibly appearing to help Fury and Coulson plan strategies against the Skrulls or giving Carol a rousing speech that convinces her to work with S.H.I.E.L.D. .

8 CONFIRMED: MAR-VELL

Jude Law and Brie Larson in Captain Marvel

As true comic fans know, Mar-Vell was the original Captain Marvel, debuting as the character in 1967. A member of the alien Kree race, he eventually adopts a more human appearance and frequently collaborated with heroes from across the galaxy. He later passes from cancer in the early '80s due to exposure to a cosmic radioactive nerve gas.

Mar-Vell will be portrayed by Jude Law in the film. This version of the character acts as a Kree mentor to Carol during her time with the Starforce. Although from the looks of the trailer, he may have an ulterior motive to befriending her.

7 WANT TO SEE: HOWARD STARK

John Slattery Howard Stark

Founder of Stark Industries, Howard Stark was essentially the prototype of his son, Tony. A sarcastic scientist and ruthless businessman, Howard worked on various projects for the U.S. government during World War I and II. He would eventually become heavily involved in working with S.H.I.E.L.D., providing them with the majority of their weapons early on.

In the MCU, Howard Stark is portrayed by John Slattery and was eliminated by a brainwashed Winter Soldier. His passing solidified Tony's determination to take both business and engineering seriously as Iron Man. Tony's parents were taken in the early '90s, so it's entirely possible for Howard to still be alive.

6 CONFIRMED: ATT-LASS

In the comic book, Att-Lass is a member of the Kree race and military commander who eventually becomes Captain Atlas, a villain who often went up against the likes of the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Quasar. He would also later become the lover and husband of Dr. Minerva, who is also featured in the film.

In Captain Marvel, Att-Lass is a member of the Starforce and portrayed by Algenis Perez Soto. We're assuming this is pre-Captain Atlas so it will be interesting to see if the film sets him and Minerva up to have larger roles in the future MCU.

5 WANT TO SEE: MONICA RAMBEAU

In the comic books, Monica Rambeau is one of a few heroes to adopt the name Captain Marvel. In fact, she was the first female Captain Marvel, not Carol Danvers, although she had different abilities. Monica could project and manipulate light energy in a variety of ways and served as a longtime member of the Avengers and Nextwave.

This is where it gets a little dicey. While there are plans for Lashana Lynch to portray Maria Rambeau, Monica's mother, in the movie, however there hasn't been an announcement as to whether or not Maria's child will be featured in the film. It would be a nice touch to have her appear as a young child, only to reappear as a grown adult in future MCU films.

4 CONFIRMED: BRON-CHAR

Bron-Char is a member of the Kree race and a member of Galen Kor's Lunatic Legion. A loyal soldier in the battle against the human race, Bron-Char was often included in battles with the Avengers, Captain America and Guardians of the Galaxy. He was also an agent of the Supreme Intelligence.

Not much is known about Bron-Char's role in film at this time. He is played by Rune Tempte is also a member of the Kree Starforce that Carol and Mar-Vell are a part of. With a character as obscure as this, the film may go in a completely different direction than the source material.

3 WANT TO SEE: WONDER MAN

A former actor-turned-villain-turned-superhero, Simon Williams became an Avenger in the mid-70s, becoming fast friends with the X-Men's Beast He went on to be involved in a rather convoluted love triangle with the Scarlet Witch and Vision. He is also known for being a founding member of West Coast Avengers.

Another character whose appearance has been hinted at through several MCU movies, actor Nathan Fillion was set to appear as Simon Williams on movie posters that were included in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, those scenes were eventually cut, although there has been talk of bringing the character back for future MCU installments.

2 CONFIRMED: CHEWIE/GOOSE

Debuting in Ms. Marvel Vol. 2 #5, Chewie is Carol's adopted alien cat. It's stated in the comics that the cat resembled Star Wars' Chewbacca and has been a loyal friend to Carol ever since.

While it's true that Carol does have a cat in the movie, it does remain to be seen if it will be an actual alien cat. However, we do know that due to potential trademark infringement (even though Disney owns both properties), the cat has been renamed as Goose in the film. This is a nod to the Top Gun character, which itself is a nod to Carol's time as a pilot.

1 WANT TO SEE: PHYLA-VELL

A Titanian/Kree hybrid and sister of Genis-Vell, Phyla-Vell is a cosmic superhero who debuted in the early 2000s that frequently worked with Captain Marvel and Quasar. Interestingly enough, she has also assumed both of those mantles at different points in her superhero career. A fierce warrior, she eventually became a fan favorite member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Since we're trying to include as many people who have been Captain Marvel at some point throughout the years, it would definitely be nice to see Phyla-Vell included. Perhaps she could appear in an earlier incarnation of the Guardians along with Yondu and Starkhawk.
