Samuel L. Jackson reveals that meeting Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel is what places Nick Fury on a path to become the director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

As Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe concludes next year with Captain Marvel and Avengers 4, audiences will get to see how the 1990s-set origin story ties into Avengers: Infinity War and that jaw-dropping post-credits scene.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Jackson said that Fury meeting Brie Larson's Carol Danvers will be “a mind-changing, attitude-changing moment for him that leads him to become the person that we know."

Captain Marvel will apparently be Fury's first taste of super-powered beings, and leads him on the path to helping Tony Stark form the Avengers. “He [now] understands that there are these other things out there," Jackson said. "He understands that they’re not all enemies, and we do need to find allies who have specific kinds of skills that humans don’t have. And trying to convince people above him is a difficult task because they haven’t seen it or experienced it.”

Although the character has become something of a giant of the MCU, Fury wasn't always in a position of power. As well as a first look at Larson in her Captain Marvel costume, fans recently got a glimpse of Jackson's de-aged Fury in Captain Marvel. Apparently just a lowly desk jockey when he is introduced, '90s Nick Fury is still a long way from the top of S.H.I.E.L.D.
