One of the defining aspects of Captain Marvel is how much being a part of the military forms the core of so many of the film's characters. Even more than Marvel's Captain America  movies, which were more focused on Steve Rogers being the best possible soldier than actually exploring the military, Captain Marvel throws itself fully into the inspirations from the armed forces.

Carol Danvers and Maria Rambeau are both proud members of the US Air Force, while Kree characters like Min-Erva are defined by their roles as members of their military. At a recent Q&A with the cast of Captain Marvel, Brie Larson, Lashana Lynch and Gemma Chan opened up about the training they received in preparation for the film.

For Brie Larson and Lashana Lynch, the training meant getting to find out what it's like to be in a jet. "Flying in an F-16 is like your eyeballs coming out the sockets and landing in your back pocket," Lynch shared. "That was great! I can't liken it to anything else but that it's wonderful to be able to be an actor and just add these different experiences and skills to your repertoire."

"It was just nice to have the military welcome me into their environment and feel really, like, noticed," Lynch continued. "For womenwoman to be really up lifted through the MCU, I think it's such a special marrying of two types of worlds that really meshed well together. I feel like I'm not only representing women, I'm representing black women and single mothers, I'm representing all women in the military, and that's really damn special."

Gemma Chan may be playing an alien soldier, but even so, her character is rooted in her role as a soldier, specifically as a sniper for the Kree Starforce. When asked if she had to go to sniper school, Chan exclaimed, "I did! I had to learn how to crawl with a rifle... I did all the drills, there's an amazing stunt team that Marvel has and they hope you look like you know what you're doing."

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau. The film arrives on March 8.
