Since the Kree officer known as Mar-Vell appeared in 1967, a Captain Marvel has graced Marvel Comics. When it wasn't the original, the name was taken by two others. The first was Monica Rambeau. The second, and current, person to take the mantle was Carol Danvers.

For all intents and purposes, Carol is the most powerful Captain Marvel. Yet, Monica has her own powers that overshadow the former Air Force officer. For more details, here are 5 reasons why Carol is the most powerful Captain Marvel and 5 why Monica is the most powerful.

10 Monica: Energy Transformation

Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel

Bombardment by extra-dimensional energies did more than give Monica the ability to fly. It allowed her to transform into any type of energy inside the electromagnetic spectrum. This includes power like cosmic and gamma rays that affected other Marvel heroes and villains in different ways.

This ability is far beyond what the current Captain Marvel can do. While she can absorb energy, she can't become it. For instance, Monica turned into a lightning bolt to stop the sea creature Leviathan.

9 Carol: Alien DNA Modification

Carol was already strong and fit before she got her powers. As an Air Force pilot and NASA security officer she needed to be in top shape to take on numerous threats. That was increased 100-fold when she was exposed to the Psyche-Magnitron.

From there, her body was modified with Kree DNA. As this alien race is stronger and more durable, Carol's abilities were also enhanced. On top of the powers she received from the alien device, her strength, agility, and invulnerability were also magnified.

8 Monica: Incorporating New Energies

Monica's ability to transform into different energies gives her an advantage as the most powerful Captain Marvel. It allows her to also absorb powers from unknown sources. Though, it does take a few minutes.

For instance, in the Avengers/JLA crossover, Monica was initially affected by Green Lantern's power. However, as soon as she adapted to the energy, she was able to absorb the ring's power.

7 Carol: Seventh Sense

As part of her exposure to the Psyche-Magnitron, Carol gained some unique powers. One of these was akin to a seventh sense. Where a sixth sense would be something like Spider-Man's Spider-Sense, the seventh sense allowed Carol to catch quick glimpses of the future.

Unfortunately, this was not a power she could pull up when needed. It was something that occasionally manifested. Lately, it seems to have disappeared altogether. In the end, it may have been more of a side effect to her exposure.

6 Monica: Invisibility

Sure, Carol's superhuman speed can make her invisible to tracking equipment. However, to fight someone, she has to "reappear." On the other hand, Monica can become truly invisible.

Besides visible light, Monica can't be seen in other wavelengths. Fortunately, this doesn't stop her from using her powers. She can still fly and shoot energy from her hands. Basically, she's Space Ghost, except with more power.

5 Carol: Practice

It takes thousands of collective hours to become an expert at something. With that in mind, the current Captain Marvel is the most powerful on the basis of how long she's been a superhero.

She began her career as Ms. Marvel back in the 1970s. While her powers have changed over the decades, particularly when she became the hero named Binary, she learned to hone her abilities and utilize them in unique ways.

4 Monica: Immortality

The current Captain Marvel is darn near indestructible, but she's not ageless. Like other Kree warriors, Carol will age. Though, like Superman, it might be slower.

On the other hand, Monica was immortal for a time. When she was irradiated with photons to repair some of her injuries, her powers not only doubled but she also became pure energy. Though this eventually disappeared, she remains somewhat ageless.

3 Carol: Can Survive In Space

It's true that Monica can survive the vacuum of space. To do so, she needs to travel in one of her energy forms. The downside is encountering an unknown energy source along the way. Should this happen, Monica might need to become solid once again to analyze the power and utilize it.

Carol doesn't need to do this. Similar to the original Mar-Vell, she is able to fly unaided in space. Carol has also been shown battling alien individuals and ships without the need for oxygen or another support service.

2 Monica: Leadership

Sometimes, it takes more than metahuman skills to be the most powerful. It also takes leadership. This is why Monica moves ahead in terms of leadership.

Prior to her transformation, Monica was a de facto leader of the New Orleans harbor patrol. Not long after she joined the Avengers she became its chairperson to defend the team from inner and outer threats. When Captain America or the current leader is unavailable, Monica steps in to run the ever-growing Avengers shop.

1 Carol: Immunity

Like her DC counterpart, the Man of Steel, Carol is currently one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel universe. One of the similarities she has with Big Blue is an immunity to most poisons and toxins.

This is certainly a plus when it comes to villains who rely on these options to harm others. It comes down to the way her powers regularly regenerate. Though a toxin may be powerful enough to knock her out for a bit, it's only for a few seconds before she's ready for a knock-down fight.
