Between its inclusion of Blockbuster Video, a de-aged Samuel L. Jackson and its titular hero proudly sporting a Nine Inch Nails t-shirt, Captain Marvel is clearly looking to make the absolute most of its 1990s setting.

However, the most recent photo from the set of Marvel Studios' next film is not only reminiscent of the bygone decade, but it's also very topical.

On the eve of the 2018 United States midterm election, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson shared a set photo to her Instagram. The image features Larson as Carol Danvers in her Starforce uniform as she stands at a payphone, surrounded by Rock the Vote posters. Accompanying the photo is a caption that reads, "Captain Marvote is a bad pun but now that I have your attention please vote tomorrow."

Founded in 1990 by Virgin Records America co-chairman Jeff Ayeroff, Rock the Vote is an organization dedicated towards increasing political involvement and voter turnout among people aged 18 to 24. Over the course of the decade, Rock the Vote became well-known for its partnership with MTV, as well as its celebrity supporters and spokespeople.

Rock the Vote was a major proponent of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, which allowed for greater access to voter registration. Additionally, the organization established the very first telephone and online voter registration systems in 1996.

However, while Rock the Vote is fairly synonymous with the '90s, the organization is still actively pursuing its main goal of increasing voter turnout among young people to this very day. Hence, why their appearance in Captain Marvel is as contemporary as it is retro.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, and Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Algenis Perez Soto, McKenna Grace and Annette Bening. The film arrives March 8, 2019.
