As the last few days of 2018 slip away, an exclusive image of Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson and Jude Law continues to build the film's anticipation, as well as further the mystery behind Law’s unconfirmed role.

The image from Empire suggests a close relationship between the two characters, considering their embrace and expressions. There have been rumors that Law’s character is Mar-Vell, a Kree soldier who later became an Earth hero in the comics called Captain Marvel, whose DNA was accidentally fused with Carol’s in an explosion, turning her into a human-Kree hybrid with similar superpowers.

Hinted at before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury faded into dust in Avengers: Infinity War, Larson’s Carol Danvers is a former United States Air Force Pilot who discovers both her alien heritage and cosmic powers courtesy of the Kree, an advanced intergalactic alien race engaged in an ongoing war with the cunning Skrulls, who are known for their uncanny shapeshifting abilities. With her new identity, Carol is drafted into the war as a part of a military unit known as Starforce, whose members will consist of earlier incarnations of Korath and Ronan the Accuser, who we know from James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, sniper Minn-Erva and Law’s character, who serves as its leader.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Starforce Commander, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau. The film arrives March 8, 2019.
