Disney+ introduces the future of storytelling with an AR-enabled short film, Remembering, starring Brie Larson.

Disney leveraged the excitement around Disney+ Day by releasing Remembering. Brie Larson stars in and produces this short film about a writer trying to recover a lost idea when she's interrupted by a phone call. She's helped by her inner child, played by young actress Dusty Peak. The short film follows the inner child as she tries to catch the lost idea, represented by a swirling cluster of light voiced by Larson. Directed and written by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Elijah Allan-Blitz, the film is being hailed as "pure magic."

Pairing with the classic storytellers' fantastical imagery and music, Disney introduced an augmented reality function that it promises is a breakthrough in how stories will be told. Viewers follow Peak's character through "The World of Imagination," and the AR feature brings the fantastical rainbows, waterfalls and shooting stars into the forefront.

This isn't the first time Disney has dabbled in AR, but it's the first AR app that connects directly to the Disney+ platform. Disney told TechCrunch it hopes to extend this technology to other forms of movie storytelling. To use the AR technology, subscribers can use their iOS device to scan a QR code on their TV screen that takes them directly to the app. Viewers can also visit Disney.com/remembering or search the App Store. By keeping the interactive technology open on their iOS device while watching the short film, they can interact with the World of Imagination, putting them in the movie. Although each experience only lasts a minute, it can be replayed as many times as desired and goes on as the movie continues. Subscribers can watch the film on the screen or on their iOS device to get the same effect.

Larson has already starred in movies for Disney before. In 2019, the Academy Award Winning Actress starred as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel, bringing that superhero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Larson most recently reprised her role in a surprise cameo appearance in Ms. Marvel, and she headlines the ensemble cast of the upcoming The Marvels, which releases in 2023.

Remembering is available now to watch on Disney+ for all subscribers.
