With the monumental reveal of the Captain Marvel concept art during last summer's Comic-Con International in San Diego, speculation immediately began as to whether she would appear during Avengers: Infinity War in all her red, blue and gold glory.

The art showed her fighting off iconic Marvel villains the Skrulls, and given we’ve already been introduced to the Kree in multiple Marvel properties thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., clearly, the stage has been set for an adaptation of the Kree-Skrull War from the comics.

But let’s get onto the big question: Where the heck was Captain Marvel? We’ll repeat it one more time – spoilers ahead for Infinity War and the film's post-credits scene.

Where Does Thanos Go At the End of Avengers: Infinity War?

Unfortunately, Carol Danvers doesn’t appear in Avengers: Infinity War. It’s a shame, since we do know that she actually shot footage alongside other members of the cast. Specifically, she shot scenes with Josh Brolin, which indicates that she had some sort of confrontation with Thanos. And although we’re disappointed she didn’t make her debut, there is a very specific reason why: She’s the back-up. Captain Marvel is the one that Nick Fury calls for help when things get too rough even for him, and in the post-credits scene, we're given a small tease for her solo film.

When Maria Hill disappears alongside other civilians, Nick Fury quickly grabs a device that sends out a signal before he too disappears, a device that displays the iconic star logo for Carol Danvers' costumed persona. Nick Fury has called for help, and Captain Marvel is coming to save the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The device Fury uses to call for back-up looks like a combination of a Go-Pro and a paging device mixed in with some '90s S.H.I.E.L.D. technology, and its 8-bit style display looks like a screen from an old Game Boy. Clearly, it links back to the '90s setting that the Captain Marvel movie will largely take place in.

Since Carol Danvers hasn’t appeared in any other Marvel film thus far, it’s likely that she isn’t even on Earth; how else could you reasonably explain why she hasn’t intervened in previous world-ending scenarios. Has she been frozen in a S.H.I.E.L.D. storage facitility only to be brought out in the worst situation as the ultimate plan B? Probably not, otherwise Nick Fury would likely have revived her during The Avengers or Age of Ultron. No, the chances are that signal was broadcast into space, where she’s fighting off an alien threat like Skrulls, the Kree... or both.

Infinity War: The Craziest Soul Stone Theory Turned Out to Be True

Avengers: Infinity War actually does take us to a portion of the galaxy that could factor into Captain Marvel. When Thanos takes Gamora and goes looking for the Soul Stone, they go to a planet called Vormir, located in the under the Kree Empire’s territory. And when the Red Skull makes a surprise return, he tells Thanos that others have arrived looking for the Soul Stone and have only been met with disappointment. Since the Kree haven’t been shown a particularly compassionate race (so far) it’s entirely possible that they came to Vormir also in search of the stone but were ultimately unsuccessful because they had nothing they loved to sacrifice.

It’s possible that Captain Marvel will be in an area of the galaxy where time moves differently, or something similar to Sakaar in Thor: Ragnarok, which saw the Grandmaster explain he was millions of years old thanks to the way time moves slower there. Since Brie Larson is 28 and her solo film is set in the '90, there has to be an explanation as to why she isn’t a lot older during Avengers 4.

Avengers: Infinity War's Post-Credits Scene, Explained

Based on the technology Nick Fury was keeping in his bag (apparently keeping it on him at all times), it’s clear that she’s a last resort option. Whatever mission she’s on is clearly important, otherwise we’d have heard more about her by now. The Kree-Skrull War will probably have died down by the present day, but who knows what else is out there? It’ll be interesting to see whether the Guardians of the Galaxy have heard of her, or if she’ll be something of a cosmic myth. It would be great if she was leading the current comics incarnation of Alpha Flight, defending the planet with her own team of operatives. However, that’s probably a little ambitious for a hero we’ve not met yet.

In theaters now, Avengers: Infinity War is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston and Josh Brolin, among others.
