Concept art found in the tie-in art book for Captain Marvel showed slight modifications to the hero's costume from the version seen in the movie, including a sash around her waist like the one she wears in the source comics. The image was previously theorized to point to a different costume that Carol Danvers would be wearing in Avengers: Endgame, but this no longer appears to be the case.
"The reason why she has a sash in the comics, is because comic books are a 2D medium," said Marvel Studios Director of Visual Development Andy Park in an interview with BuzzFeed. "So, it looks cool -- just like having a cape -- when someone's flying you can have it whipping around."
Park explained why the superfluous strip of fabric was left out of the costume's final design by referencing a comedic but sensible breakdown of superhero outfit logistics from another movie.
"But, just like how Edna in The Incredibles says, 'No capes!' because it's impractical, we did not include the sash," said Park.
It can't be denied that Carol's flashy suit stands on its own well enough without the sash. Whether or not it goes through any further evolution, she'll be donning it once again to fight alongside the Avengers when the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Three comes to its final chapter in Avengers: Endgame.
