Clark Gregg's Phil Coulson finally made his theatrical return in Captain Marvel. And now, the actor -- who has always been very vocal about the strong women on his ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. -- is coming to the aid of the Brie Larson-led superhero flick by calling out the haters that have tried to take it down.

In an interview with Nerdist, Gregg said, "I don't know if the expression is butthurt about seeing someone else get a hero that looks like them, but that's because they've always had heroes that looked like them."

"There are people that get very bent out of shape about the fact that she's a woman, and that Brie's a woman, and wants to see women moving into an equal place in humanity to men," he continued. "It's sad. It must be sad to be that kind of dinosaur wandering towards the tar pits."

The actor went on to praise Captain Marvel, saying, "Forget that she's a woman, just a great origin story, period. Someday, we'll look back like 'it was big deal that she was a woman?' and it'll seem silly."

Captain Marvel saw negative backlash after star Brie Larson made comments about creating "more inclusive" press days. She later clarified those remarks, saying, "What I’m looking for is to bring more seats up to the table. No one is getting their chair taken away." The movie's "Want to See" section was then subject to a barrage of negative reviews. Rotten Tomatoes later changed its review process, though it claims the attacks against Captain Marvel weren't the reason. Following its release, the movie was review bombed on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.
