Marvel fans have been patiently waiting for some time to hear news on the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel. Early reports about the film pertained to the additions of Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, aka the Inhuman hero Ms. Marvel, and the casting of Zawe Ashton as an unknown villain. Now, the title of the sequel has been revealed to be The Marvelsthanks to a new sizzle reel released by Marvel Studios.

While this title may be unsurprising for those who have kept up with news about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it reveals a lot about what The Marvels' story will focus on. The name is obviously referring to more than one character, which suggests Ms. Marvel's role in the film won't just be a cameo but a major part of the story.

The logo for the film also gives some clues as to Kamala's part. While the "A" in "Marvels" features Captain Marvel's insignia, the "S" is Ms. Marvel's iconic logo. The upcoming Disney+ show Ms. Marvel is set to release in late 2021, preceding The Marvels' release in 2022. This means Kamala will be an established character going into the film and the story won't need to waste time introducing her. And there's always the possibility that Carol Danvers herself could make an appearance in Ms. Marvel to set up events of her sequel.

Teyonah Parris, who played Monica Rambeau/Photon in WandaVision, is also set to reprise her role in The Marvels. Having herself been Captain Marvel at one point in the comics, Rambeau shares a powerset similar to Carol, with both using energy-based abilities given to them by outside forces.

Monica Rambeau in WandaVision

Whether or not Monica is part of the titular "Marvels" remains to be seen, but her relationship with Carol is sure to be an issue. In WandaVision, Monica showed that she held some resentment towards the hero when Jimmy Woo brought her up when discussing the events of Avengers: Endgame. It's likely this due to Carol's absence during the death of Monica's mother and Carol's best friend, Maria Rambeau, who passed away during the five-year gap left by the Blip when Monica was dusted.

While plot details about the sequel are few and far between, a title like The Marvels suggests fans are going to see three superpowered women fighting together on the big screen. Captain Marvel's only been a part of the MCU for a couple of years, but the name of her sequel proves just how big of an impact she's already had.

Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Megan McDonnell, The Marvels stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 11, 2022.
