A new report suggests Marvel is looking to hire a female director for Captain Marvel 2 and the New Avengers film.

According to Daniel Richtman, Michelle MacLaren is in the mix to direct both films, but she is one of many who have been floated as a potential director. Whoever ends up directing would be the fourth female director to helm a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The others include Anna Boden, who co-directed Captain Marvel with Ryan Fleck, Cate Shortland, who directed the upcoming Black Widow and Chloé Zhao, who is directing the upcoming Eternals film.

The new report fits with previous speculation that Captain Marvel 2 will directly tie into the next Avengers film. While the sequel will focus on Captain Marvel, it would also set up major future events, similar to Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.

Michelle MacLaren is a well-know TV director and producer. Her TV credits include Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Westworld, The Walking Dead and The Leftovers.

Carol Danvers was last seen in Avengers: Endgame at the funeral of Tony Stark. She helped the team defeat Thanos and bring back those lost during the Snap. It is unclear if the sequel will pick after the events of Endgame or serve as a prequel similar to the original Captain Marvel and the upcoming Black Widow.

Written by Megan McDonnell and starring Brie Larson, Captain Marvel 2 hits theaters on July 8, 2022.
