A photo from the set of The Marvels offered a glimpse at Ms. Marvel's live-action costume.The image shows actor Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel in an entirely new costume, though it still sports the same red, gold and blue accents of previous costumes seen from the set of the Captain Marvel sequel.
The costume shown in this set photo is slightly different than the first look at Kamala Khan's costume, which was leaked from the set of the upcoming Disney+ series Ms. Marvel earlier this year. The image showed the 16-year-old Vellani on the Atlanta, GA set dressed in her full, comics-accurate superhero costume. Prior to that, set photos of Vellani in a Captain Marvel suit were shared on social media, hinting not only at the "No Normal" comic storyline but at Kamala Khan's homemade costume, which has a similar red and blue color scheme.
Kamala Khan made her comics debut in 2012. The Disney+ series Ms. Marvel will, like the comics, follow Pakistani-American teen Kamala Khan as the titular hero, who was Marvel's first Muslim character to star in her own series and will be the MCU's first onscreen Muslim hero.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and newcomer Vellani as Kamala Khan making her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Filming on the sequel began in August 2021 and details on the plot still remain relatively unknown, though DaCosta has previously revealed that the story will explore the more human side of Carol Danvers, saying she wanted to approach "these characters as human beings and not necessarily as superheroes."
In the same interview, DaCosta also explained how she intended to give the characters Monica and Kamala enough space to breathe in a film focused on Captain Marvel. "It’s interesting, and something we thought about and worked through a lot, which was how do we get each of these really big, exciting heroes space in a two-hour film?" DaCosta said. "Captain Marvel has a history from the first film, Kamala will have her Ms. Marvel show, and Monica Rambeau, we’ve only seen her a little bit in WandaVision." She continued, "How do we honor the part of the story they're at in terms of the canon, while also within our story making them equal?"
DaCosta added that she and the film's production team had been thinking about the story in terms of "what part of the journey do we need to see for each of them? How do we honor the part of the story they're at in terms of the canon, while also within our story making them equal?"
The Marvels hits theaters on Feb. 17, 2023.
