The newly announced Captain Marvel 2 is expected to continue Carol Danvers' adventures following the events of Avengers: Endgame.  Many expect the film to entangle Carol once again with the Kree or some extra-terrestrial threat, but there's a possibility that Captain Marvel 2 will explore one of the hero's most iconic stories from the '80s, one that involves the X-Men Rogue.

During the '80s, Carol, then Ms. Marvel, was written by Chris Claremont, most famous for his run on The Uncanny X-Men. During his tenure, Claremont introduced two characters who he'd later bring into his run on X-Men: Mystique and Rogue. In order to weave his multiple characters together, Mystique went from being a Ms. Marvel adversary to an X-Men one, but not before Rogue did something that would forever alter both her and Carol's characters: she absorbed Carol's powers.

THE MS. MARVEL STORY

The core conflict between Ms. Marvel and Mystique is very simple. Mystique at the time was in a loving relationship with her fellow mutant, Destiny, and had adopted Rogue as her own daughter. Destiny's mutant ability allowed her to see into the future, so she foretold that Carol would cause intense pain and hardship to Rogue. Mystique, being a protective mother hen of her flock, decided she needed to kill Carol before she could lay a finger on her daughter. Thus, sparking the huge conflict between the two heavyweights.

However, Rogue overhears Destiny's prophecy and decides to take matters into her own hands. At the time, Rogue was a teenager, way too young to make rational decisions, which probably is why her plan was so reckless. She decided to corner Captain Marvel, steal her powers and then dump her over the Golden Gate Bridge. But Rogue holds on too long, not understanding her own power, and essentially absorbs a fragment of Carol's entire personality -- as well as permanently absorbing her abilities.

Both Carol and Rogue would be forever damaged by this event. While both would become stronger than ever, with Rogue absorbing the powers of Captain Marvel and Carol going on to become Binary, the trauma of the events would force the two women down very different paths. Rogue, in attempting to both atone for her sins and get Carol's personality out of her head, would come to Professor X for help. Carol would work further with the X-Men in order to figure out who she was, but, eventually, the trauma would lead her down a path of self-destruction and alcoholism, to the point where she became a shell of her former self.

Of course, the X-Men accepting Rogue into their own definitely wedged Carol away from Charles and the others. Furthermore, even after Rogue did all she can to prove herself a hero, Carol never let go of what Rogue did to her, and the two have fought multiple times since.

Later interpretations of the events, such as X-Men: The Animated Series, would put Carol in a coma, as the Captain Marvel inside of Rogue fights for freedom. Regardless, the event stands that Rogue absorbed a part of Carol, meaning Captain Marvel, once again, had to rediscover who she was without her powers or cognitive functions.

THE PARALLELS BETWEEN CAROL, ROGUE & MONICA

One interesting aspect to the story we just recounted is added when we take into account the trajectory Carol has taken in the MCU. Carol is at first a pawn of the Kree, who use her as a weapon, manipulating her feelings to control her. On the other hand, Rogue is also a soldier, in-part manipulated by Mystique, but also genuinely in a mother-daughter relationship with her. Yet both stories end with the younger girl rejecting the path their parental figures chose for them.

At this point in the MCU, Monica Rambeau, a girl who looked up to Carol the same way Rogue looked up to Mystique, is fully grown. We know Megan McDonnell, one of the writers of WandaVision, will write the script for Captain Marvel 2 and WandaVision will incorporate an adult form of Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris. It seems highly plausible that Parris will reprise her role in the sequel, showing what a good influence Carol was on her.

MAKING CAPTAIN MARVEL VUNERABLE

One big criticism of the Captain Marvel character as she appears in the MCU is that she at times seems too powerful. While in the first film she was coming to terms with her power, the end of Avengers: Endgame features her as an unstoppable titan of strength. It takes a Power Stone to hold her back from Thanos.

While other characters, like Scarlet Witch or Dr. Strange, have powers that might counter Captain Marvel's strength, you'll be hard-pressed to find any threat out there that can stop her. Perhaps the adventure can start out in space, with Carol fighting something like the Brood, only to travel to Earth to protect the planet from the alien menace. As the Brood infest the planet, Carol encounters Rogue, a seemingly powerless character who ends up making her life a living nightmare.

Heroes need to be challenged in every film in order to build tension. This builds not only the character tension surrounding your agency being taken away and all that, but it also establishes that strength isn't always all that much. Sometimes, a character can just have an ability that counters you in one, keyway. Of course, after that, Carol and Rogue would have the same power set, allowing both of them to fight in their full glory, evenly matched. All while Mystique does something or the Brood do something that puts a ticking clock on Carol's actions.

THE MUTANT FACTOR

To be brief, one huge appeal of this is to start introducing mutants into the MCU in an organic way. Mystique was, for some time, Carol's arch-enemy so it makes sense that she'd have a role in an upcoming film. Furthermore, with Mystique often being presented in very different ways in the Fox X-Men films, this could be a chance to adapt the magnificent villain from the comics.

Rogue would have to go somewhere after her redemption arc in the film. Where better to go, then, than Xavier's Mansion? Captain Marvel 2  could tie directly into whatever plans Marvel has for the X-Men, something that may be just too tempting to pass up.
