The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always had more hits than misses in regards to its films' successes; however, not every story is perfectly told. Captain Marvel, for instance, is well made, but it suffers from a lack of explanation about the titular character's abilities.

In the film, Carol Danvers is given cosmic abilities after an accident with an engine powered by the Tesseract imbues her with some of its energy. From there, she spends most of the film with an inhibitor chip that relegates her powers to superhuman strength and the ability to fire energy from her hands. In the comics, her powers are explained to allow her to absorb any form of energy and redirect it through her blasts. While the film loosely shows this, it's never properly explained.

Carol is one of the most powerful characters in the MCU. When she removes her inhibitor chip at the end of the first film, her stored power erupts into a spectacular blaze of energy that gives her the ability to fly and plow through ships like it's nothing. It was incredibly entertaining, but it also raised questions about how much Carol knew about the full potential of her abilities, especially since the MCU has shown other heroes take time to learn about what their abilities enabled them to achieve.

For instance, when Tony Stark learned to fly, it took him trial and error. The same could be said for Wanda Maximoff, who didn't fully fly until Avengers: Infinity War, primarily only able to maintain a slight hover beforehand. Carol, on the other hand, mastered flight almost instantly. Since viewers were never shown how exactly her powers work, it's hard to say if she was given an innate sense of her abilities when the Tesseract empowered her or if the climatic moment was luck.

Avengers: Endgame showed that she had gained a stronger understanding of her abilities since her last appearance on Earth, but the main issue remains that the lack of explanation of her powers means that fans can primarily speculate about how her abilities have developed since her last appearance.

Meanwhile, new characters, like Monica Rambeau, have opted to take the time to show how their powers work. While Monica's power introduction is similar to Carol's, there is more focus on how her abilities operate to help fans understand how she works. For instance, Monica is learning about her abilities alongside fans, experiencing it all for the first time in WandaVision.

Carol will eventually need an explanation on how her powers function. With Kamala Khan joining Captain Marvel 2 and being a major fan of the hero in the comics, Carol's sequel would serve as the perfect time to have Captain Marvel explain how her abilities work to Kamala, as well as the audience in the process.

While it doesn't ruin the franchise, explaining Captain Marvel's powers will add a new layer to the character and help flesh out the world of the Infinity Stones, which can grant some humans super abilities. Captain Marvel 2 will have to pick up the pieces of the first film, Endgame, Monica's relationship with her old friend and wherever Kamala Khan is in the MCU at the time of the sequel. It will undoubtedly be a difficult balancing act, but it's nothing Carol Danvers can't handle.
