Captain Marvel 2 has found its director.

According to Deadline, Nia DaCosta will helm the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel. DaCosta recently completed work on the highly anticipated Candyman reboot, which she wrote and directed.

Marvel Studios reportedly met with several directors for the project over the past few months, with DaCosta sitting down with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige as recently as this weekend. She is slated to take over from Anna Bowden and Ryan Fleck, who directed the first film.

Little is known about the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, which will be penned by WandaVision staff writer Megan McDonnell. The first film took place in 1995, when Brie Larson's Carol Danvers broke away from the Kree and made an enemy of her mentor Yon-Rogg. The character also appeared in Avengers: Endgame, which is set in 2023. That leaves a lot of ground for the sequel to explore.

In addition to Candyman, DaCosta wrote and directed the modern western Little Woods, which stars Thor: Ragnarok's Tessa Thompson. Her past credits also include Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life, Top Boy and Night and Day.

Written by Megan McDonnell and starring Brie Larson, Captain Marvel 2 hits theaters on July 8, 2022.
