Johnny Depp has had many iconic roles throughout his career, especially in his collaborations with director Tim Burton. Although, one of his most memorable roles, and arguably his best, was Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean film series based on the eponymous rides at Disney's theme parks. The film franchise featured dominant names in the acting industry over their years, like Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. They were some of the most expensive films ever made, but made up for it with huge box office successes for each installment.

Depp began his tenure as Jack in 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, but he was only one of the contenders for the now well-known pirate. With such a memorable role like Jack Sparrow, it's hard to imagine someone else as the captain of the Black Pearl.

Jim Carrey was by far the closest person to almost land the part. The iconic comedic actor known for The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, along with many other films, actually turned down the role. Carrey had a conflicting schedule between Pirates of the Caribbean and his 2003 film Bruce Almighty, so he was unable to commit to both projects. Unfortunately, the actor recently announced his retirement from acting.

In addition to Jim Carrey, Robert De Niro was another actor who actually turned down the role. When the frequent Martin Scorsese collaborator first read the Pirates of the Caribbean script, he didn't believe the films would succeed financially. The franchise tremendously proved De Niro wrong with its massive box office successes.

Although, it was a good thing that he turned down the part due to De Niro's tendency to play the tough gangster personas. Depp was arguably the best choice to play the comical pirate, and no one else would have done it so effortlessly.
