"Captain America" Wins in North America as "Amazing Spider-Man 2" Starts Strong Internationally

Two Marvel heroes landed at the top of the domestic and international box office charts this weekend, as "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" once again reigned supreme in North America and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" topped the foreign box-office chart.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel and Disney's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" brought in $26.6 million domestically in its third weekend -- making it the second film this year to claim the top spot for three weekends in a row (The Lego Movie being the first).

In other milestones, the film also crossed the $200 million mark domestically and has blown past the $176.6 million domestic take of "Captain America: The First Avenger." Overall the film has made $586.6 million globally -- which is more than the first two "Iron Man" films and the first "Thor" movie made during their runs.

"The Winter Soldier" wasn't the only reason Disney had to be happy this weekend. "Frozen" continued its stellar box office run to become the No. 6 title of all time worldwide with $1.129 billion in earnings. It also become the highest-grossing animated film of all time in the international market, as it has brought in $729.3 million overseas. The combined performances of "Frozen" and "The Winter Soldier" have brought Disney a cool $1 billion at the international box office this year in record time.

Looking at the rest of the domestic market, "Rio 2" landed in the No. 2 spot with $22.5 million, while newcomer "Heaven Is for Real" opened with $21.5 million -- well above the $11.5 million brought in by Johnny Depp's science fiction film "Transcendence," which landed at No. 4. The horror spoof film "Haunted House 2," another opener, rounded out the top five with $9.1 million.

Overseas, Sony's "Amazing Spider-Man 2" spun its web in 14 markets, bringing in $47 million this weekend to land at the top of the international box office chart. The film opens May 2 in North America.
