“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” Sets New April Opening Day Record

Having already broke April records for advanced ticket sales, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” put another notch on its shield on Friday.

Variety reports that the sequel to 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” brought in $37 million domestically on Friday, which was enough to make it the biggest opening day for an April film. The previous record holder, 2011’s “Fast Five,” also holds the record for the highest-grossing April Stateside opening weekend with $86.2 million. “The Winter Soldier,” the latest film from Marvel Studios, is expected to leave that number in the dust, with a projected domestic take of $95-100 million.

The first “Captain America” film brought in $65 million three years ago in its opening weekend, and earned $177 million in North America overall.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” has already done well globally, as it opened in several territories last weekend and currently sits with a gross of more than $100 million.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson, Toby Jones, Hayley Atwell, Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo, Georges St. Pierre and Maximiliano Hernandez.
