“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” Brings in Record-Breaking $96 Million

The summer movie season seems to have started a month early, as Marvel’s super soldier had a record-setting weekend at the North American box office.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” brought in $96.2 million domestically, which was more than enough to beat the previous record-holder for the top April opening of all time, “Fast Five,” which brought in $86.2 million in 2011.

It’s also well above the domestic box office take of “Captain America: The First Avenger,” which brought in $65 million three years ago in its opening weekend.

The latest film from Marvel and Disney is also doing well overseas — the sequel has already taken in $207.1 million at the international box office, outpacing the $193.9 million that the first film brought in internationally during its entire run.

Overall “The First Avenger” brought in $370.6 million globally, while “The Winter Soldier” currently sits at $303.3 million globally — so expect to see it bypass the original’s total haul by next weekend.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson, Toby Jones, Hayley Atwell, Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo, Georges St. Pierre and Maximiliano Hernandez. The character will appear in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” next summer.

Also at the box office this weekend, THR reports that Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah” fell more than 60 percent domestically in its second weekend, coming in at No. 2 with $17 million and a domestic total of $72.3 million. The movie, starring Russell Crowe, has earned $178.5 million globally since it opened. “Divergent,” based on the young adult book series by Veronica Roth, brought in $13 million domestically to land at No. 3; it’s made $136.4 million globally since opening.
