Captain America Sequel Will Be ‘Darker, Edgier,’ Co-Director Says

Between the film’s subtitle and casting developments, there can be no doubt Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier will borrow heavily from the acclaimed story arc of the same name. But just in case there was a question, co-director Anthony Russo all but answered it Tuesday during the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour.

While stopping short of calling the sequel an adaptation — “I mean, they’re all sort of rooted in what’s come before, but they’re all also their own jumping-off point as well” — Russo confirmed to The Huffington Post that the film is at least heavily influenced by the story by Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting and Mike Perkins.

“Well, we like the [story]. I can’t talk too much about specifics, that’s the way Marvel handles things,” he said. “I can say in general that there’s sort of a darker, edgier sensibility at work there that we found appealing, and that is going find its way into Captain [America] in the modern day.” Russo added that he and his brother Joe will be having lunch with Brubaker soon.

He also sidestepped questions questions about possible appearances by Bucky Barnes, Sharon Carter, S.H.I.E.L.D. or any of the Avengers, saying, “Marvel would shoot me if I answered.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which goes into production early next year, stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie. The film opens April 4, 2014.
