Marvel’s Cold War event will unite Captain America with former partners like Sam Wilson. The event also promises to bring the absent Nomad back into the picture. These are just a few sidekicks who have benefitted from working alongside Captain America over the years. He has been training and partnering up with other heroes since his debut in World War II.

While characters like Sharon Carter and Diamondback became love interests and worked alongside Captain America, they never became his official sidekicks. 12 Bucky Barnes Joined Steve Rogers As The First Bucky

Steve Rogers’ first appearance as Captain America coincided with James “Buchanan” Barnes’ debut as Bucky. They first met after the super-soldier serum transformed Rogers into Captain America. The government assigned Barnes to help Rogers, though he wasn’t initially sure about his role.

Barnes discovered Rogers’ secret identity as Captain America. He began to accompany him on missions as his first official sidekick, Bucky. One of the harsh realities of being Bucky Barnes is the fact that his death in the role was a cautionary tale for Marvel sidekicks, though he later returned as the Winter Soldier.

Steve Rogers and James Barnes weren’t the only versions of Captain America and Bucky over the years. The government selected former Yankees’ bat-boy Fred Davis, Jr. to become the second Bucky. He worked with William Nasland, who took over as Captain America.

Nasland began his crime-fighting career as the Spirit of ‘76 before he replaced Rogers. They had many adventures together during the war and with the All-Winners Squad. Nasland died serving his country as Captain America while Davis retired after he was shot and injured. He recovered, but was later killed as part of a scheme against Winter Soldier.

Elizabeth “Betty/Betsy” Ross was an agent with the FBI when she first met Captain America and Bucky. She often worked alongside the patriotic duo, though she didn’t join the team officially until after their apparent deaths.

Agent Ross grew close to Jeffrey Mace, a hero formerly known as the Patriot. He took over as Captain America after Nasland’s death. When Bucky II was shot and injured, Ross repurposed Nasland’s former bulletproof cape. She became Golden Girl and joined Mace as his new sidekick for years. They eventually fell in love and retired from super heroics in the ‘50s.

The super-soldier serum process was incomplete and they began to experience paranoid delusions. The government kept them in cryogenic stasis for years. 8 Rick Jones Became Steve Rogers' Second Official Bucky

The Avengers eventually discovered Steve Rogers frozen in the ice, bringing Captain America to the modern era. Rick Jones was the young leader of the Teen Brigade and a friend of the Hulk who helped the Avengers in their early days. He would eventually become one of the strongest Marvel sidekicks and work with heroes like Captain Marvel as well.

Captain America shot down Rick Jones’ first attempt to take over as Bucky due to his grief over Barnes’ death. However, Rogers still spent months training Jones. Captain America eventually gave Jones his approval to become Bucky, though the legacy of his predecessor weighed heavily. A Red Skull-possessed Cap “fired” his short-lived sidekick, and Rick Jones moved on.

7 Sam Wilson Joined Steve Rogers As The Falcon

Red Skull would be indirectly responsible for bringing Captain America together with one of his closest partners. Sam Wilson first met Captain America while fighting alongside the local population of an island controlled by Red Skull.

Sam Wilson became the Falcon after Captain America suggested he wear a mask to hide his identity. They began to work together as partners and later as Avengers. Captain America upgraded Sam Wilson's Falcon costume to give him wings. Wilson was Rogers’ choice to replace him as Captain America, which is a role they now share.

Captain America began to investigate the Power Broker’s operations after his first encounter with John Walker/U.S. Agent in his Super-Patriot role. The Power Broker had been enhancing wrestlers like Dennis Dunphy to make money as super-powered criminals.

Dunphy learned of the dark plans behind his new abilities. He decided to help Captain America bring the Power Broker down. He merged Daredevil’s original look with Wolverine’s costume to make his own superhero suit as Demolition Man/D-Man. He worked with both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson as Captain America’s partner over the years, despite some low times in his life.

Lemar Hoskins decided to go by Battlestar instead due to the negative racial connotations of his first alias. Walker’s time as Captain America was short as he evolved to his U.S. Agent identity. The villainous Superia enhanced Cathy Webster into a man-hating warrior, though she broke free of the conditioning to become Free Spirit. Jack Harrison followed in his idol’s shoes to help Captain America and Free Spirit stop the Serpent Society as Jack Flag. They adventured together across the country, and Jack Flag and Free Spirit eventually fell in love before his death.

Captain America’s origin was much different, which led to his pairing alongside a new partner. Rikki Barnes earned the role of Bucky while fighting alongside Captain America. She started her own multiversal journey and followed the heroes to their own Earth. Rikki became the new Nomad, discovered her origins as Franklin Richards’ creation, and joined the Future Foundation.

2 Ian Rogers Worked With Sam Wilson As The New Nomad

Ian Rogers as Nomad from Marvel Comics

Steve Rogers spent time trapped in Arnim Zola’s pocket universe known as Dimension Z. He raised Zola’s son Ian as his own during the years they fought against the mad geneticist’s forces. Ian appeared to die in battle, and Captain America left him behind.

However, Ian Rogers survived and aged quickly in Dimension Z. He eventually escaped and took on Steve Rogers' former costumed identity of Nomad. He was Sam Wilson’s first partner when Falcon took over as the All-New Captain America. Unfortunately, Rogers’ time as Nomad was short-lived and he was lost in the multiverse after a battle with Zemo.

1 Joaquín Torres Worked With Sam Wilson As The New Falcon

2016’s Captain America: Sam Wilson (Vol. 1) #6

One of Sam Wilson’s greatest accomplishments saw him take over as Captain America. During his first run in the role, he helped stop the Sons of the Serpent and Dr. Karl Malus from experimenting on people captured at the border. Unfortunately, he was too late to save young Joaquín Torres from his transformation.

Torres had his genetics merged with Wilson’s vampiric falcon, Redwing. He grew wings and developed a shared telepathic connection with Redwing and Sam Wilson. He used his new abilities to become the second Falcon, taking over Sam Wilson’s previous role. He fought alongside Captain America, though joined the Champions when Wilson returned to his former role.
