Chris Evans isn't afraid to admit that watching Captain America successfully lift Mjölnir in Avengers: Endgame on the big screen made him a little misty-eyed.

In a statement for Empire magazine's "The Greatest Cinema Moments Ever" article, headed by director Edgar Wright, Evans talked about choosing to see Endgame at its opening premiere. "Normally I see the films I work on well in advance, and I rarely sit through premieres," he explained, but, "being the last installment of a ten-year journey, I wanted to experience this final film the same way the audience would."

Describing live reactions to the iconic Mjölnir catch, Evans said that his theater went "absolutely berserk" when that scene happened. "Even though I knew the moment was coming, I still got emotional," he said. "In the following weeks, friends and family would send me clips from theaters around the world losing their collective shit at this moment. Seeing those reactions, and knowing that I was lucky enough to be a part of those memories for those people, made me feel a sense of pride and gratitude that I'll never be able to properly express. In those moments I'm not an actor, or even an adult; I'm a little kid again completely captivated by the power and magic that movies can wield. Damn it... I'm getting choked up."

The possibility of Captain America being worthy enough to lift Mjölnir, as per the hammer's magical inscription, was teased as far back as 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, where -- during a house party -- the Avengers entertained themselves by trying to pick Thor's weapon off a table. While everyone comically failed to do so, Steve Rogers seemingly moved it slightly upward, causing Thor to briefly tense up until he suddenly conceded defeat. Though Mjölnir would later be destroyed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, Thor eventually reclaimed it during Endgame's time heist while traveling back to The Dark World timeline, proving that -- despite falling into depression from his failure to kill Thanos -- he was still worthy of its power. Upon seeing Cap lift his hammer for real against Thanos, Thor happily exclaimed, "I knew it!"
