These days, Karen Gillan is known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nebula, Gamora's sister in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. However, if things went a little differently, she could have played Sharon Carter in the Captain America films.

During the Disney+ special Sarah Finn: Casting a Universe, Marvel Studios' casting director Sarah Finn revealed Gillan initially tried out for the role of Agent 13 in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She didn't get the part, but Finn had taken a liking to Gillan, keeping her name in the back of her mind for future reference. "Karen was someone who was an incredibly grounded and solid actor but who was also cooky and charming in the most wonderful way," she explained.

When it came time to cast for Guardians of the Galaxy, she called Gillan back into the studio. Finn said, "Even though she had never played a character like Nebula, I was really interested to see her read. So, she came in and auditioned. James described Nebula as being somewhat childlike and Karen having this kind of cherubic beauty mixed with the darkness that she was able to convey."

Of course, the role of Sharon Carter went to Emily VanCamp in the end, who's set to reprise her role for the upcoming Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Gillan, on the other hand, went on to play Nebula in both Guardians of the Galaxy films, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Gillan will also reprise her role as Nebula as a voice actress in the upcoming What If...? animated series.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell and Daniel Brühl and will be available on Disney+. The series will hit the streaming service in fall 2020.
