Captain America's Infinity War Shields Hold Special Significance to Black Panther

Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman reveals Captain America's new shields in Avengers: Infinity War are more than mere weapons.

When the Avengers: Infinity War trailer hit, eagle-eyed fans theorized that Steve Rogers was wearing new gauntlets that would serve as shields. Those were indeed confirmed as his new claw shields, courtesy of T'Challa's sister Shuri, and now actor Chadwick Boseman has revealed those weapons actually hold deep significance.

“They trust each other,” the Black Panther actor told Entertainment Weekly, referring to the two men moving past their feud from Captain America: Civil War. Addressing that new bond, Boseman detailed the meaning behind the gauntlets used by Rogers as a replacement for the shield he gave back to Iron Man in Civil War.

“His shield was already made from Vibranium anyway. So it’s just an extension of what he already had. This time, actually giving it to him, as opposed to…” Boseman explained, hinting that the alloy used by Howard Stark to make the shield during World War II was indeed stolen by S.H.I.E.L.D.

Ryan Coogler's Black Panther already revealed that people like Ulysses Klaue has smuggled Vibranium out of the African nation, so there's no reason why S.H.I.E.L.D. couldn't have gotten its hand on the precious metal. Of course, seeing as it wasn't given to the organization by Wakanda, it would be considered stolen property.

“Me actually giving it to him is a testament to our relationship and trust," Boseman added, which solidifies that the Wakandan king has realized Rogers and his Avengers are trustworthy after all, and that the new shields represent the "bridge" that T'Challa spoke of building with the outside world at the end of Black Panther.
