"Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" have been nominated for the Academy Award for visual effects. They're joined in the category by "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and "Interstellar."

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning in Beverly Hills by filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams, actor Chris Pine and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.

Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" was also nominated for best makeup and hairstyling, where it will go up against "Foxcatcher" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel."
