WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Captain America #1 by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Leinil Francis Yu, Gerry Alanguilan and Sunny Gho, on sale Wednesday, July 4.

Thanks to the Free Comic Book Day issue of Captain America, we got a taste of what Black Panther writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and superstar artist Leinil Francis Yu had in store for Captain America’s fresh start. The new creative team is bound to launch their bold new take on the Sentinel of Liberty, fittingly, on Independence Day of all days. Now, thanks to a preview of the issue, we already know that an important X-Men villain will have a major role to play in the series.

The preview of the issue plunges us in the winters of Russia, and it’s there that we witness the return of the X-Men villain Selene, who appears to be up to all sorts of no good.

Captain America fresh start Selene

We haven’t seen the villain in some time, and while she did appear in the Marvel NOW! era, Selene last played a major role in the 2009 Necrosha X event. It’s definitely interesting to see the mutant pop up in a Captain America book of all places. Clearly, Coates has some very specific plans for the character — plans that do not bode well for Steve Rogers.

We’ll know more once Captain America #1 hits store shelves Wednesday, July 4.
