Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Civil War” is on track to earn $175 million or more at the domestic box office over opening weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it could earn as much as $200m at the North American box office.
If “Civil War” earns this estimated box office total, it will become the fifth-best opening of all time, with potential to rise even higher. The film would fall behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($248 million), “Jurassic World” ($208.8 million), “Marvel’s The Avengers” ($207.4 million) and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” It currently has a 94% rating on RottenTomatoes.
Though technically a sequel to “Captain America’s” second solo outing “The Winter Solider,” the movie boasts an impressive list of characters, including Iron Man, Black Widow, Falcon and Bucky Barnes. It will also introduce several new characters, like Black Panther. The film also marks Spider-Man’s Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.
