Why Captain America Had to Leave the Avengers for the First Time

In Tales of Suspense #95 (by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee and Joe Sinnott), Captain America decides to retire from crimefighting so that he can devote himself to a life with his girlfriend, Agent 13...

So in Avengers #47 (by Roy Thomas, John Buscema and George Tuska), Cap has to also quit the Avengers...

Of course, Cap decides AGAINST quitting right away (and he just continues with his secret identity public knowledge now), but by then, he was off the Avengers and Stan Lee wanted Thomas to keep it that way. Captain America next teamed up with Black Panther in a story arc in Tales of Suspense and so Thomas had Black Panther join the Avengers as basically Captain America's replacement on the team (with Cap vouching for the hero for being his replacement).

As noted above, of course, Thomas slowly got Cap back into the series along with the other members of the "Big Three."
